I have seen the original poster use an exclamation point before in announcing a notable death. Although it's odd, I think it was intended as a breaking news manner, and not celebrating a death

If the first lady fag hag [<----Namo's note: I'm not going to edit that out but thanks to somebody pointing it out to me, I would like to say that this really is a ridiculously misogynist construct that I had no business invoking just on account of the Reagan record still leaves me enraged. But you know how I'm always saying, "Of course white people are racist, it's in our DNA? Well, we men have a LOT of work to do to keep our misogyny in check until, maybe, someday there isn't any misogyny anymore. Anyhoo, I didn't want to disappear what I wrote, so I'll leave it there, with a vow to try to do better.] Nancy Reagan had had the wherewithal to tell Ronnie that her psychics said he should do something about the AIDS epidemic instead of worrying about appearances and needing their homosexuality to be the old-fashioned, closeted kind, a whole LOT of us might have experienced a very different 1980s, Mr Roxy.
Unfortunately it was a hell going on all around you that you probably didn't even notice was happening. And that kind of denial started right at the top. Saint Ronnie and Lady MacRonnie.

It's time to play some of my old show tunes. Which show was it that included a song about Nancy? It was perfect. Some great Nancy-type quotes. Oh yes I'll be listening to that.
I think it must have been whoop de do. Or it's companion show whose name is eluding me at present.

You can tell who's a Republican on here and who isn't-- or who's a heartless bastard who obviously didn't/doesn't understand the significance of the evil Reagan and Mrs. Reagan did to a the gay community (not to mention the other men, women and children affected by AIDS) in the 1980s.
So shame on us, Yankeefan7 and Roxy? No. Shame on you. They were at hand during a holocaust and did nothing.
I am not Larry Kramer, either.

I'm fascinated by the fact that most news I've seen about this barely mentions her children, if at all. They're quick to,go on and on about how much she loved her husband, but if her death was my first introduction to Nancy Reagan, I wouldn't have even realized she had kids.

It's funny how people rewrite and interpret history to fit their victim agendas. Nancy Reagan referred the Rock Hudson matter to the US Embassy in Paris. It is very possible she thought that they would be better able to handle the matter. There was also, at the time, a documented by the press call from her to the French President on the matter. Plus, if the press got word that the Reagans were giving special treatment to their friends that regular people couldn't get, they'd have been (rightly) up in arms. Also, it is very possible that she didn't understand how dire his situation was at the time. And in the end Hudson did get to see that doctor and receive that treatment, but he was too far gone. I never bought the "Reagan ignored AIDS narrative". Research was well funded from 1982 on, in each budget Reagan signed, in ever increasing amounts. As for healthcare, it wasn't the issue then that it is now. Most people were covered and treated. Reagan was FAR from perfect on AIDS, but his legacy is much more complex that most on either side are willing to admit. Just remember, he was instrumental in defeating the Briggs Amendment in 1978, which would have banned gay teachers in California public schools. YES, it damn near passed, until he (likely at the urging of NANCY), came out publicly against it.
The fact that Reagan didn't do a major speech on AIDS is shameful, and a stain on his legacy. However, he did come around, and recorded an AIDS PSA in 1993, in which he did a sort of mea culpa. People either want to demonize Reagan, or make him into this perfect hero. Neither is true, as is often the case. The truth is more complex and nuanced.
That's my two cents.

"Nancy Reagan referred the matter to the US Embassy in Paris."
Oh, pish.
"Research was well funded from 1982"
PISH
"As for healthcare, it wasn't the issue then that it is now."
PISH
"Just remember, he was instrumental in defeating the Briggs Amendment in 1978, which would have banned gay teachers in California public schools."
O.F.F.S. The mobilization of gay people around the country gets the credit for THAT defeat, not Reagan for FINALLY realizing which way the wind was blowing THANKS TO THAT ACTIVIST WORK.
"However, he did come around, and recorded an AIDS PSA in 1993"
Uhhhhhhhh. Just... ohhhhhmyyyyyygod. Where is everybody else's gold star for knowing LONG BEFORE THAT????
Until my dying breath I will resist the Reagan/Bush hagiographies because THEY ARE A LIE.

Reagan was not only a disaster on AIDS, but his foreign policy was a nightmare and he drove the country into extraordinary debt by hugely and pointlessly increasing military spending while at the same time slashing vital social programs that people actually needed. Even if you want to give him a pass on AIDS, which most historians wouldn't, the man was an outright disaster for the country. He was an actor who gave good speeches and had no business running anything, and we're still feeling the results of his idiotic policies to this day.

And I will resist the redefining of the word "demonization" to include "a recitation of historical facts." But at least your "it too" admits your sterling Reagan narrative is a lie.

I know for sure one of you was there, and I'm pretty sure the other was a child in the early 80s, so I know which one I'll believe, and it's not the queen who thinks history has been unkind to Reagan.

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt was unveiled on the Washington Mall right across the street from the tastefully redecorated White House ("All this Carter GINGHAM, ugh!!!" CNN's Elsa Clench exclaimed on Reagan's Inauguration Day) on a weekend in October 1987. Thousands and thousands of queers mobilized and NOBODY covered it. CNN explained, you know, it was a weekend. NO word from the White House. But when the fundamentalists had a rally later on Reagan sent a taped message to the throngs and declared, "With you I feel BORN AGAIN!!!" to their delighted squeals.

I can't remember who said it but I'll put quotation marks around it because it was some smart writer:
"Just Say No had the same impact on drug use as Have A Nice Day had on mental health."
Which singer in this video died of a drug overdose?

I will forever applaud her work to raise awareness for breast cancer -- an issue that impacts me VERY personally.
And, I will applaud her work in pushing for stem cell research, and raising awareness for Alzheimer's. Another issue that impacts me personally.
Few people are 100% good or 100% bad.
I thank her for the good work she did. There were flaws, but there was good.

"The legacy of the Reagans' inaction while thousands of gay men died gruesome deaths...." is a myth.
