Which Labute play is your favorite? Mine's This is How it Goes...

I abhor Neil Labute. I abhor Neil Labute. I abhor Neil Labute.
Disengenous, misanthropic hack. If he could JUST admit that he gets off on the vomitous he writes instead of insisting that it's "us" who get off on it, there might be hope. I think he is an asshole of epic proportions.
ive never read any Labute, but read about all of his various works, as they sound fascinating. what would you recommend as a jumping off point?

Not looking to start a fight or anything....
I thoroughyly enjoyed "The Shape of Things" and "The Distance From Here." I also liked "This is How It Goes" at the Public.
Yes, he's quite provocative, but peel back a few layers in most of his works and there's a lot very fascinating stuff there that's not at all misogynist or misanthropic or "shock for shock's sake." He gets a rise out of some people, but if you can calm down and lucidly examine what he's trying to get at with some of those tactics, it's extremely thought-provoking.

I first read the Shape of Things. Loved it.
Namo - I don't respect your opinions

I can top that, I actually actively disrespect YOU personally, Captain_Obvious.
Did you read the essay I think in the Voice a couple weeks ago, Margo, talking about Labute as one of the new, facile bad boys?
I felt so validated reading it.

Oh I think you know why. History of lying. Materialism. Trend hopping. Wah wah wah, Zeldaaaaaaaaa! The usual.

Hmm... That's the wonder of the internet. You really don't know anything about me. :)

No, the wonder of the internet is you believing that it's possible that I don't know anything about you. There's such a thing as insitutional memory. Look it up.
Oh right, you don't use reference books. You like to ask questions because you're such an ENGAGING guy.

He's supposed to be directing Hamlet next season at the Utah Shakespearean Festival...I wonder what that will be like. The productions are usually done "how they would have been done at the Globe."

Oh great. And this time it will be directed by a man who converted to Mormonism so his transgressive themes really stand out!

Namo, I think you're a bitter old man.
Go out and **** somebody. It might make you feel better.

Because I think you are a gold digging phoney and Neil Labute is a hack writer hiding behind the cloak of transgression? Heck, I wrote those two opinions while basking in the afterglow of a very terrific threesome.
Hey, how's the whole thing with the boyfriend telling you he loved you in a boat going? Is he not returning your calls yet?
If he still is, wait for the "I'm just feeling very crowded by you" speech. It's coming REAL soon.

Actually, he's asleep now. he called me about an hour ago, telling me about what his mom said at dinner. And he's spending the night tomorrow.
I'm not a gold digger or a phoney.

"I'm not a gold digger or a phoney."
Which explains, of course, why you post like one.
Could we stay ON TOPIC? Please?
I, for one, enjoy LaBute's work, what I've read of it, that is. I've only read "The Shape of Things." It was recommended to me by a drama teacher who had played Evelyn in a CCM production of the play. I found it thoroughly engaging. I really liked it.
Does this make me a bad person?

Alter ego, maybe. Who knows? If I was a gold digger I wouldn't be with Nathan. I don't have anything to say about the phoney part. Sometimes I post stuff just to post.
I have purple hair. Not.

I tried to read Autobahn, and it took me a while... but I love his other stuff.
No, Zoran, you're not a bad person, unless you actually think Evelyn is a good person. Then you might be bad, cause she's really a pyscho bitch.

oh no... there's so much to evelyn... she definitely has a point.

I know she has a point, which relevant to society, so forth.. but still, her execution is a little off.

depends on the actress and the strength in the final scene. i thought the best thing about the play when i saw it was how everyone was arguing whether adam or eve were right afterwards. it was like a jamie/cathy fight from last 5... i think if the whole audience automatically goes to one side then the production, director and actors have failed.
