"I don't get the hate either."
Not much to get. Obviously only speaking for me, I can't stand her as a performer, and like her even less as a public 'personality'. Basically, I like nothing about her.

Speaking for myself, I like LuPone, but I didn't like her take on the song, and I think she's completely wrong for the part. That said, my casting ideas have been sprinkled through the thread, and I want to put them all together, and fill out the gaps. Now, not that I don't think that the male cast is important, it's just that I don't think that the male cast is important.
Sarah - Martha Plimpton
Susan - Kelli O'Hara
Jenny - Ana Gasteyer
Amy - Sutton Foster
Joanne - Vanessa Williams
April - Christina Applegate
Marta - Nicole Scherzinger
Kathy - Jessica Goldyn
Sutton as Amy is a horrendous idea. Not a huge fan of Applegate either. I could get on board with the rest though.
I actually think Applegate would make a terrific Amy.
I would much rather see LuPone as Joanne than Vanessa Williams. I am not a Patti fan, but I hate Vanessa Williams. Every time she sings (Sondheim especially) I wish I were deaf. Very pretty lady, and she may be nice, but I hate her as a performer. She was the worst thing (if not the only bad thing) about Sondheim On Sondheim and she was the worst Witch I've ever seen in Into the Woods. Just my opinions, though.
I think that Christine Baranski would be genius (as I've said before), and possibly someone like Beth Leavel or even Jane Krakowski?
I think that Williams can be great if she has the right fit. Have you heard her SPIDER WOMAN? And did you really not enjoy "Ah, but underneath"?
I've never heard her Spider Woman, because I didn't like the show very much when Chita did it, so I knew I wouldn't like her. lol I just don't enjoy her voice. And she seems to play the same character in everything.
>> "But the Philharmonic isn't trying to sell tickets to tourists who see shows based on names."
No, but they *will* be selling a DVD/Blu-Ray of the performance to folks who *arent* Manhattan theatre regulars but who immediately know who NPH is, which makes them more inclined to pick it up on impulse. Face it: love him or hate him, the guy's got the kind of name recognition most of us would kill for. And the Philharmonic would be first-class morons not to capitalize on that to see a return on what will be a *very* expensive one-shot evening.

I am so very glad you dont cast shows professionally.
