I'm shocked the Public is doing this. How is presenting half a show the right thing to do artistically?
"The Public Theater announced today that there will be a special family-friendly matinee of the free Shakespeare in the Park production of INTO THE WOODS on Wednesday, August 22 at 3 p.m. at the Delacorte Theater. This matinee is designed to engage younger audiences and to serve families unable to attend evening performances. The 95-minute production will comprise act one only of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical INTO THE WOODS."

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:00pmInto the Woods is licensed that way for high school and middle school production. It's kind of unfortunate since the end result really doesn't demonstrate the point of the show, but I assume they're just going to use the "junior" version that is already licensed. I don't really have a problem with them offering it, especially since it isn't replacing one of the other scheduled performances. Personally, I plan to stay very far away from the Delacorte that day.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:03pmI don't get what the problem is. It's not like they are hiding the fact that it's just the first act.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:04pmIt should be well attended, and will be very useful and interesting to anybody planning to do a production of Into The Woods Jr!

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:05pmI was under the impression that "junior" versions were licensed because under-18s were performing the material. Obviously you don't want some 13 year old singing "Tits and ass, bought myself a fancy pair..."

It depends on which show you are licensing the Junior version of. Some have cuts that are simply made to shorten the show. Others have the cuts for time as well as edits for possible objectionable content.
The Met did this a couple of seasons ago with the Julie Taymor production of The Magic Flute, editing it down to a one act.
I would say that I'm not sure why anybody is getting their panties into a twist over this, since, as others have pointed out, it's an added performance, is not replacing a regularly scheduled performance, and is clearly being advertised for what it is, but then I remember who started this thread.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:19pmIs there an A Chorus Line junior? I've heard of high school productions where the Val sings "This and that" but I've never seen one, so I don't know if that's just urban legend or not.

When will Naked Boys Singing be licensed with a junior version?

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:16pmI've heard good things about FUZZ, the junior version of HAIR.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:29pmJunior productions are insulting on every aspect. They're demeaning to the show, they dumb down the work for younger students, when they should be introducing them to more mature things, and not assuming they don't understand them, and they cheat the audience of a good show. Into the Woods in particular is hurt by these. I'd never attend or produce one.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:35pmI'm curious as to why they're trying to reach out to family's in the since the show doesn't exactly have ticket sales to uphold and people go crazy for this show already. Maybe donations has something to do with it?

^I have no problem with them since most of them are approved, and in some cases, developed by the original authors. If it has their approval that's the only opinion that matters. It's all in an effort to make more money anyway and if that helps the authors to write and develop new work then more power to 'em.

The School edition of Avenue Q is possibly the worst idea in the world and the song changes are hideous.
I think youth groups should stick to musicals that are appropriate for their age groups, and only minor editing is needed. When shows are changed to be Child friendly ,and not just to shorten the show, it ruins the piece.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:54pmMy "panties aren't in a twist", but I agree with Bob30 and HappyPhantom. If kids aren't old enough to sit through Act II of INTO THE WOODS, then they probably aren't old enough to go to Big Boy/Girl theater of any kind. I'm not a fan and never was, but there is a genre called "Children's Theater" for the smaller kids.
Neutered Into The Woods#17
Posted: 7/30/12 at 8:06pmI really don't see the problem in exposing kids to things other than children's theatre. So what if they're seeing a shorter version- if it gets some kids interested in theatre, why is that a bad thing? And no one's making anyone see this- if you want to see the whole version, don't go to this performance.

I'm not saying this is a crisis, wizard. Sorry if that wasn't clear. And I'm all for taking children to adult theater (except when it is obviously inappropriate). That's where my folks took me and, while we can argue about the state of my mental health, I don't think I can blame the production of CAN-CAN I saw when I was 11.
The only objection I can see to Act II of ITW is that beloved characters die with some frequency, but a beloved character died in BAMBI and the nation muddled through.
My grandkids are 7, 10 and 12. I'd have to think about the youngest, but I'd have no problem with taking the elder 2 and they would have no problem behaving in a full-length ITW. That's all I'm saying.
No boycott, no law suit, no angry letter to Oskar Eustis from me.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 8:31pmA lot of professional theatres doing Into the Woods have a couple "Happily Ever After" shows in their schedule. I see no problem with it. Don't go if you don't want to see that version.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 8:34pmAccording to Goth, Obama doesn't want you to see the end of the show.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 9:08pmWhen the film version of "The Sound of Music" was initially released worldwide, it was banned in Germany. A few months later, they finally did show a severely edited version that ended "happily" after the Captain and Maria's wedding. The whole last part with the Nazis was cut out.
