Posted: 7/31/12 at 12:20amI wonder what these supposed people who leave after act one think everyone else in the theater is doing just sitting there. Waiting for the bus?
Neutered Into The Woods#52
Posted: 7/31/12 at 12:21amYeah, I find that kind of suspicious. None of the idiots I saw left. That would be a different level of stupidity.

Also, I find it hard to believe that people who would be dumb enough to think it was over at intermission wouldn't be the same people consulting their programs to see how many songs were left until it was over.

Posted: 7/31/12 at 12:24amI think these people's stories are about as fake as the orgasm I gave my high school girlfriend!
Neutered Into The Woods#55
Posted: 7/31/12 at 12:27amI can vouch for the veracity of people believing the end of act 1 is the end of Into the Woods. I've been asked.

My story? As I said, no one left. They said it to whoever they were with.
I also overheard someone ask who Sondheim was and someone say this is way better than whatever play was called on before Into the Woods.

Not ITW, but both times I went to FOLLIES in L.A. I overheard people nearby asking, "Is this based on that show in Palm Springs?"
(They meant the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies which is a terrific show and has been running for 20 years, but Jesus!)

"I don't think the junior versions are always about cutting objectionable material, but reworking existing shows into something more suitable for school children to perform."
Kids today are so f'in lazy.

So, are Junior versions part of the nanny state, too, Goth?
You probably shouldn't include the kids who were exploited by their managers or parents, or the ones who slid into substance abuse.

I have worked as an assistant director for some "Jr." productions. Most of the cuts are for length and for potentially offensive stuff (interestingly enough, Sarah still gets drunk off Dulce de Leche in G+D Jr.) Some of the cuts are idiotic, though. I know firsthand what kids are capable of, and they don't need the dumbed down version.
I'm a little pissed off about censorship right now, because I just watched a performance of Spelling Bee where "goddamnit" was replaced with "goshdarnit".

I agree with Goth. Judy Garland's childhood is something we should hope ALL children should have. Gary Coleman's, too!
Or is he saying the material of the Cousin Oliver episodes of the Brady Bunch is on par with Into the Woods?

Posted: 7/31/12 at 5:54pmI've performed in a few JR. Titles. The cuts are mainly for time length along with some of the more complicated moments in the score, that elementary and middle schoolers wouldn't be able to handle. I think it all depends on the educator or director, if he or she thinks there students are capable of handling the full show full score original keys and all go for the full version. but for those on a smaller budget and Script and music needs, they have that other suitable option. The experience is really for the kids isn't?

Yes, but what kind of experience are the kids getting? By the time they are 7, aren't most kids reading Harry Potter these days? The first book deals in some painful detail with the death of his parents and the abuse of Potter by his aunt and uncle.
So why can't a kid the same age see Act II of ITW?
If the Act-I-only version is just about attention span, then I think shame on adults for not expecting more from their children.

I played Lumiere in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST JR. when I was 12. They made a few cuts that I just thought were unneccassary(sp?), like all the parts that hinted at Lumiere and Babette being in love. I was thinking, really? I'm not allowed to act like im in love with a feather duster? Damn. Also, "If I Can't Love Her" was cut at the last minute because they thought the kid playing the Beast had too high of a voice for the song. And in the opening, most of the dialogue of random people shouting phrases were cut because they thought we couldn't handle it. EX: "I need, six eggs, that's too expensive", and the like were cut. Most of the choreography was down to the bare minimum as well.

Posted: 7/31/12 at 9:15pmI think children should model their acting careers on Geri Lee Reischl. The little spitfire who will forever be known as "fake Jan" when she replaced Eve Plumb who was unable to sign on for The Brady Bunch Hour variety series. What a trouper!

Posted: 7/31/12 at 9:17pmQuiche2, I'm curious as to what cuts were made by MTI for the junior version? From what you say it sounds like a lot of the cuts were made by the director/creative team for your production, such as the cutting of "If I Can't Love Her." And of course the choreography being the bare minimum was again a decision of your creative team, since MTI would not dictate how choreography was handled.

Posted: 7/31/12 at 9:25pmWhen my 5th grade class did ONCE they made everyone American because Molly (who was the girl) didn't have her adult teeth yet and whitstled everytime she said the letter S and that character said words with the letter S in them a LOT and it was distracting enough without the accent. Also all referemces to vacuum cleaners were taken out because they were too sexual.

A friend of mine (from the OBC of Beauty and the Beast, actually!) was in a touring company of The Fantasticks in the early '70s that played (of all places) a very large Catholic school, run by a fleet of nuns.
They read the play in advance and objected to the use of the word "Rape!" even though it meant "abduction" in context.
The nuns, knowing they couldn't use a three-syllable word like "abduction" to take its place, all voted and decided, i kid you not, to use the word "Snatch!" instead. My friend said it was all they could do to get through it without hysterical laughter.
The nuns had no idea they'd actually made it worse.

Lyric sample:
We've the obvious open schoolboy snatch,
With little mandolins and perhaps a cape.
The snatch by coach; it's little in request.
The snatch by day, but the snatch by night is best.
Just try to see it.
And you will soon agree, señors,
Why
Invite regret,
When you can get the sort of snatch
You'll never ever forget.
