OOOOH I'm excited about this one. This is one of my favorite shows. Has anyone heard how Elena is doing? When does this open?
You can hear Elena sing "Dont Cry..." here....

I don't see it listed, and I am kind of hoping they cut "Art of the Possible." It's a terrible song that is pretty much tied to Harold Prince's original staging of it in rocking chairs. I was hoping they'd use "The Lady's Got Potential" with the film lyrics.
I assume that from the new placement of "Another Suitcase" that it will be sung by Eva now and not the mistress.

Just as long as they don't bring back the insecticide lyrics.
I always thought Another Suitcase, which I was just singing, quite poorly, in the shower, should belong to Eva.
I didn't get the character of the mistress at all.
Elena sounds alright on that clip.
Better than Madonna, though she is no Patti.
I like Elena Roger's voice - she's sort of a Julie Covington meets Carolee Carmello. It's a very latin voice (and I don't mean her accent - which admittedly is strong).
I definitely heard some Julie Covington in her voice. Lets just hope she can belt better than Julie!
I don't like Eva singing "Another Suitcase in Another Hall". I like that they're including "You Must Love Me", but... wow... I hope they didn't make too many changes.
You know when I first began listening to all the EVITA recordings, I was very pro Patti and negative on Covington, but as time goes on, I actually like Covington's portrayal best. She doesn't have a pretty voice but its filled with emotion and she sounds effortless, gritty and completely appropriate. When I listen to LuPone now, it feels kind of all one level.
Somewhere on BWW I posted a link to Elena Roger singing the Fantine stuff from LES MIZ and she can defintely belt to the rafters. Her voice is very unique though which I think bodes well for her.
She doesn't sound too bad... I don't know what I think about You Must Love Me being included in the show, I thought it was good for the movie only. We'll see I guess..
Patti never really did it for me as Eva, I truthfully didn't like her voice in the part at all. She fits Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney much more, I believe.
i wanna cry! this is one of my favorite musicals of all time... i had NO idea they were coming out with ANOTHER cd.
i wish i was quicker! lol

I just preordered. Its a sad commentary on my local music store when I can order a CD from England for less money than I could buy it there.
You know I agree. She may not sound like Patti Lupone but it's nice and different. It's not so trained and sounds very gutsy. I think she'll do fine and she can sure belt to the rafters. She ALSO has the Argentine accent which is a definite plus.

Yeah, when I saw the show - I didn't get "another suitcase in another hall" - I just didn't really know who the character was so I didn't really feel for her.

I actually really like her rendition of Don't Cry.... Her accent takes a little getting used to, but overall, she sounds great.
My only concern with her accent is what it will do to the show - if she has a strong accent, but Philip Quast, Gary Milner and Matt Rawle don't, it really makes her stick out like a sore thumb.
ETA: If the song is really acted well, you really do feel sorry for the Mistress. I saw the current tour twice, once with the original cast, once the new(er) cast. The first time the Mistress was played by Kate Manning (I believe - I dont have the Playbill handy, but the name rings a bell), and she was outstanding. The second time was a new actress... and I was bored. It's one of those songs that needs to be acted out.

what does the 10.99 pounds turn out to be in good ol' U.S. money?
Well, to be fair, she's doing the song as "herself" at a PR event - she's not in costume or in character so she may have an ability to mask her accent beyond what she's doing on that television event.

I saw the tour last year in San Diego. It was not a very good production. But I do love the show and I am thrilled it is coming back to London.

RentBoy: $19.37. BUT, when I went to checkout, the price changed to £9.35, which converted to roughly $16. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining. With shipping, the CD cost me $21.

I saw Elena Roger give that performance - it was on the 'Parkinson' chat show here in the UK. It was certainly gutsy and great to see an Argentinian actress in the role.
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber were talking about the new production. L-W said that he now knows a great deal more about latin music than he did when he wrote 'Evita'. I think we can expect some very different arrangements and orchestrations. Looking forward to it!
By the way - 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' was originally titled 'It's Only Your Lover Returning' - ....the truth is I never left you...

"When I listen to LuPone now, it feels kind of all one level. "
I agree, she is very monotone.
"Yeah, when I saw the show - I didn't get "another suitcase in another hall" - I just didn't really know who the character was so I didn't really feel for her. "
Can someone please explain the scene of "Another Suitcase." I've been researching it and still don't quite get it.
Patti might sound "monotone"- which I don't agree with. But her belt is unmatched by any of the so called "belters" of today.
