well by simply putting on a few words "Based On The Broadway Musical"

If that doesn't turn a main-stream audience off, I don't know what would.

I suppose Depp could be skipping down that dark alley with a guitar and a suitcase... and musical notes could be floating over his head.
So does this mean Sweeney will be shaving those whiskers on kittens before giving them to Mrs Mooney?

SWEENEY TODD was never a mainstream, popular enough musical to have that kind of tagline. Mainstream America has largely never heard of it. When WICKED or LES MIZ are made into movies, I think you'll see that "Based on the Broadway sensation" kind of advertising.
Then it wasn't the film for them in the first place.
I think sweeney is going to be a harder sell on the grounds that the music is not as mainstream or commercially accessible as say Rent, Hairspray or Dreamgirls

I wouldn't say the version of RENT we got was that commerically accessible.

You wouldn't?

Harder to sell?
Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman.
"See Johnny Depp in the new Tim Burton movie! Lots of blood, gore, and he sings..."
If it were any easier to sell, they wouldn't need press agents...

You bring Rent up in a Sweeney thread, the two should never be spoken of at the same time.
Burton could film this with singing finger puppets and it would still be a more commercially accessible than Rent would ever be.
Here's the other picture from IMDB:
Your missing the point
It doesn't matter who the director is (Planet of the Apes anyone) or the star(From hell) i am talking about the music in it.This is not as commercial or easy listening as the rock feel of Rent or the Music of Hairspray.

The poster also suggests that the name of the movie is "beware".
I can picture the trailer in my head already. I can't wait!
Of course the music of Sweeney Todd isn't as "accessible" as Rent or Hairspray. That's why, from the looks of the posters, this will be marketed as part horror movie.
As well it should be.
It's not subtitled "A Musical Thriller" for nothing.
They have no reason to market it as a musical yet. It's just a poster. They have to peak people's interest in the film first, so they want to see the trailer. Then, when they advertise it as a musical in the trailer, they will know if the movie's for them.
It's not surprising that they will market this as part horror film, because that is obviously what the story lends itself to. Horror, thriller, that is what may get the interest of the general public, not to mention the creative team.
I believe that on the credits listing on the bottom of the poster, it does in fact say "based on the musical", or based on the play, and it credits Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. but the print is so small it is very hard to make out.
SWEENEY TODD is by the composer's definition, a HORROR story. So this talk of them trying to market the film as such is unnecesary. Its being marketed as a thriller because that is what it is. Its a horror story told through music. Posters are to sell the genre and the stars. The music will come with the trailer.
I didn't care for this poster as much, mainly because of the Sign and the whole BEWARE thing, but the picture was still really cool! Can't Wait!
It does look like the title of the movie is "Beware."
That was a bad call.

I'm not crazy about it. I think the teaser poster was MUCH better.
I am surprised how no one is remarking how you can see Mrs. Lovett's shop in the distance. Looks awesome.
