'During "Defying Gravity" when Glinda grabs a blanket (or something) and says "Elphie, you're trembling. Here, put this around you," why does the audience laugh?'
I think it's just because Glinda inadvertently gives Elphaba something that makes her look more like the image of the Wicked Witch that is familiar to the audience. So it's kind of funny that the origin of the cloak is something so random. On a side note, it's the second "Wicked Witch" prop of Elphaba's that turns out to be given to her by Glinda - the first is the hat. It's made fun of in the Broadway Abridged parody of Wicked at www.broadwayabridged.com:
IDINA MENZEL
Kristen Chenoweth, I get to go to see the Wizard of Oz in the
Emerald City! And you get to come with me!
KRISTEN CHENOWETH
To show my gratitude, I'll offer you this pointy black hat,
which is just like the one Original Wicked Witch Margaret
Hamilton wore in the movie!
IDINA MENZEL
What a great idea! How about throughout the play, you
continue to offer me things like a black cloak, or a black
cape, or a broom to make me look more and more like Margaret
Hamilton did! These attempts at humor will be painfully
predictable from a mile away!
AUDIENCE collectively groans.

They found this on Wicked on Broadway a while ago. Here are the two pictures separately. You can tell that they also blurred Shoshana's picture to make the ensemble less recognizable.

Right, DefyingEDCT. The original shot of Shoshana was a full-sized picture of her wielding the broom, but the shot was only from the waist up. I doubt that they blurred it to make the ensemble less recognizable; I doubt that they thought anyone would notice this in the first place.
Jilani, that's what I was thinking. Thank you for the clarification. And the Broadway Abridged excerpt is all too true. Except I didn't think it was predictable; I had no idea what the audience was laughing at!
Interesting photo, morosco. Ooh, and it reminds me: When I saw Wicked on Broadway a few weeks ago, there was a slight mistake, if you will. When the Oz Head first appeared and was moving downstage, a stagehand (I'm guessing) didn't really try to hide himself. What made it worse was that he was wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans! He wasn't even wearing black. I just thought it was very strange that this crew member made no attempt to conceal himself in the middle of the show. It made me chuckle.

Posted: 8/26/05 at 10:13pmJoshua488, I must confess, I was one of the audience members laughing. Notwithstanding that parody, I didn't find it predictable, just funny in a cute kind of way. On the other hand, my boyfriend had no idea why people were laughing . . . I guess it's just hit or miss!

I cannot believe no one has pointed this out...
So, I saved the two pictures on my computer and was flipping back and forth between them and something else jumped right out at me, aside from the blatant photoshopping.
If you look at the ensemble member all the way on the left of the picture, you might notice something kind of weird about her. In Idina's picture she's white; in Shoshana's picture her face kind of disappears. She's supposed to be black because that's Kristy Cates (the original Elphaba understudy) in Idina's picture, so to make it match up, they had to make her black in Shoshana's picture because it's supposed to be Brandi Chavonne Massey. I thought that was even funnier than the Shoshana/Idina thing.

Posted: 8/27/05 at 4:07pmYou know, I noticed that, but I thought it was just something that happened when they blurred the photo. I wonder if they really did that because of Brandi Chavonne Massey! That would be too funny if it were true!
#63re: New WICKED photos... unreal!

I don't remember directly from watching, but are Glinda and Elphaba supposed to look like they are fighting for the book in "For Good". They both look kind of mad and that they are fighting for the book... or maybe it's just the angle of the picture...

Posted: 8/27/05 at 7:35pmElphaba was willingly giving the book to Glinda - the same book that Madam Morrible refused to let her touch earlier in the show. This is a very tender, poignant exchange - no fighting whatsoever.
