Seeing Gentleman's Guide tomorrow afternoon. Is it going to be difficult to maneuver around Times Square at matinee time? Do they have streets closed at that time? Has anyone done theater on New Year's Eve?
The crowds will likely be ridiculous.
Yesyesyesyesyesyes!!!!! Make sure you have ID .. At least your theater is on 48th. The police and the barricades restrict everyone except employees and matinee theatre goers In and out. It will be a MAD scene. You will required, and funneled out after your show onto 8th ave, which will already be closed off. Don t attempt to walk anywhere except to 9th ave or uptown past 57th st. No cabs or mass transit until after midnight. And it s dangerously packed in until about 3, 4 am. I live 2 blocks from Times Square. Give yourself a lot of extra time getting to your theatre. You will be searched at the barricade at 48th and 8th. Good luck buddy! I wouldn't t do it in a zillion yrs.. ![]()

You say no mass transit until after midnight, bunnie, but I've never had a problem using the subway through that area. Up until a couple years ago I would take the 7 in from Queens and get on the 1 heading uptown at Times Square to get to my friends' place on the UWS, usually heading there around 9:00. Granted that is slightly different than trying to get into the system directly from that area, but the trains were certainly still running through all of the madness above.
Àvoid 8th at all costs. Yup, head over to 9th or uptown as bunnie3 said. I got caught up in the 8th avenue mess trying to get home. It was a nightmare. I got to 42nd and found out I couldn't cross and had to push through the huge crowd to get off 8th and go around. Took me almost 2 hours to get past 42nd.
AMNY . Com has the complete new yrs eve mass transit info. Having trouble linking.

Thanks for the useful info! I will go early and stay off of 8th. Hopefully the E subway will be accessible.
Delongpre, you need to enter your theatre from 8th. We re talking about after. Just do what the cops say, and also very aware of pickpockets and enormously drunk people everywhere. again, good luck and stay safe.

You shouldn't have too much trouble catching the E at 50th from the Walter Kerr after the show. According to the MTA website the only thing affecting the E are some stops that it won't be making in Queens. Manhattan service is not listed as being changed for tomorrow.
I'm always surprised that the TKTS Times Square booth is open on New Year's Eve. Not many shows even play today.
