New York Times new critics review guidelines

Jesse Green has let it be known that he needs to see each show he reviews at least a week before it opens.

Historically, when I show opened on Sunday Green would see it on Tues/Wed or maybe Thursday - this is no longer the case.

Remember when critics would attend actual opening night and run back to the Times after the show.

I don't remember as that's so in the past actually when did they stop doing in the 70's early 80's?

Is this ask coming from Green or from the desk, and does it apply to Green only or to the other critics too?

This is often going to be impractical. Let’s say a show has 4 weeks of previews (which is about the max a show gets nowadays)…that means there’s 3 working weeks, and usually any big changes don’t go in until the week after the first preview. And if there are big changes, a company should have time to cook before they are reviewed.

Obviously scheduling is tricky for critics especially in the spring, and Green reviews more than just Broadway, but that’s the gig. Unless this is some temporary thing related to like…..caring for a sick relative.

Like everything else you post unsubstantiated, I will take with less than a grain of salt.

Except the NYT holds much more power in the theatre community than Scott Feinberg thinks he has at THR.

I should have asked about the source as well, instead of just jumping into my reaction. (It's news to me if it is real.) If it is, then he technically could wait to review until day 5 (which seems arbitrary since not all weeks are the same obviously) although that might be as unpalatable to Jesse's superiors as it is to the production, as I said before.
