re: Newest Tony rulings: Lansbury featured; Ferrell an event

Carol Lawrence and Josie De Guzman and Debbie Allen were nominated for supporting actress not lead.

It's always about the billing and the producers of West Side never give star billing to the "kids."

I still don't see anywhere in the official links that the meeting was for ALL shows that opened since 2/12.

I guess this also means everybody in HAIR is Featured, putting Creel and Swenson in the same category.

That's too bad for Creel, because Swenson desevres the nomination over him, and I'm not sure both will get one.

Ok, none of you can read.

5 shows they determined.

Hedda, Bush, Blithe, Story, 33.

They won't necessarily be busy. The only have to deliberate on the petitions submitted by the producers. If the producers are content with the way potential nominations would pan out based on the current billing, then the committee does not have to worry about them.

WSS may not have bothered to petition for a change in nomination positions. When deliberating on a revival the committee will take into account previous productions. It would be harder to convince them that Maria should be nominated as a leading role when the two previous nominations for Maria were as featured. Precedent holds a lot of weight in regards to revivals.

Rulings I expect them to make (musicals):

West Side Story - Cavenaugh and Scaglione in Leading
Hair - Creel in Leading
Rock of Ages - Maroulis in Leading
9 to 5 - Janney in Leading, Block and Hilty in Featured (they better- that way, everyone's guaranteed a nom)
Next to Normal - Spencer and Ripley in Leading

Alice and Bobby are ALREADY above title in next to normal. Why would that have to be a petition?

Guys, read carefully. All it says is that Angela Lansbury will be a featured actress, nowhere does it say "All actors with their name above the title will be considered featured actors and actresses unless they petition".

Wrong. All performers who are not petitioned or above the title are automatically Featured unless the committee decides otherwise. This is why Tom Bosley won a Featured Tony for the title role in Fiorello.

That makes no sense. It says nowhere that all actors who are on the title are featured.

Title page of the Playbill for next to normal. Right above the title. :)

It's true. It's stupid, but all actors billed above the title will automatically be considered "lead" unless the producers petition otherwise. This is what cost Joel Grey his Tony for Featured Actor in a Musical for Chicago, as the Weissler's publicist forgot to send in the petition. I sh*t you not. He was pretty upset, evidently, and understandably so since Amos is definitely a featured role and he surely would have won that year.

On the other hand though, I don't think you necessarily have to petition for under-the-title actors to be considered lead. So even if the WWS producers don't make a peep, Cavenaugh and Scaglione could still be bumped up to lead by the Tony committee (as they should be).

It makes perfect sense! It's the way it's always been and just because it didn't say so in the article doesn't mean it's not true, numb-nuts.

re: Newest Tony rulings: Lansbury featured; Ferrell an event

OK, so now I'm confused. Theater Mania reports they only discussed 5 shows: 33V, HG, BS, YWA & G&D...so why wasn't Story of My Life discussed...it opened before some of those didn't it? Does that mean we are to assume its just not elligible. Not even elligible enough to be one of the five shows discussed? Weird. Also, I guess this means all 4 of the G&d "stars" are in the Lead category yes? Is that how they're billed on the playbill? Can someone confirm that? These "rulings" press releases always confuse me more than they help me...
