Posted: 2/11/12 at 9:51amIs it really only a limited run? Why would they not have an open-ended run with all of the buzz this show is getting?

To increase the advance and eventually allow them to say "extending due to overwhelming demand. Don't miss out."
It's marketing.

Buzz doesn't always turn into dollars.
It has been said that Disney only wants it on B'way to be able to make a killing on the licensing to regional/amateur theaters. Time will tell.

Posted: 2/11/12 at 2:32pmThere is no guarantee on any of this. Yes, it does seem likely that Disney will keep things going if the show is doing rather successful in terms of ticket sales. But, at the same time, if they are planning to make bank via amateur licensing, then who's to say that they won't stick with the original limited run, regardless of box office sales, and still make money in licensing the show out?

Posted: 2/11/12 at 3:40pmI agree that there are certainly no guarantees of an extension, but to me, the fact that their current closing date is the day of the Tony Awards seems indicative of an extension if nominations flood in for the show.

Is there any reason why they couldn't do both - start licensing it out to schools while it's still on Broadway? It's not usually done, but if they think they would be losing money overall by delaying the onset of licensing revenue, why not just start while it's still playing? Tickets would still keep selling on Broadway even if some high school in Missouri could put it on next year.

I imagine Disney will tour and license it from next year as well as potential international productions although Newsies isn't a known name compared to Lion King or Mary Poppins.

Although then wouldn't they have rushed a limited run of Aladdin as well? Of course Aladdin has bigger name recognition than Newsies, so if they did start licensing versions (which I guess they are--I know there's a regional production coming soon) it might not need the push being on Broadway could give it. ALthough I suspect the groups that would do Newsies--and there has been a lot of demand especially with boys schools, etc, wouldn't care either way.
