Last week 'Fiddler' took in over $800,000. Alfred Molina is co-starring in 'Spiderman 2' which is sure to be one of the big blockbusters of the summer. I doubt 'Fiddler' will be one of the next five shows to close.

I have heard that 'Wicked' is having trouble, however.

Trouble? What kind of trouble? There have been a few threads that have said that there has been trouble with this show....

I would be devestated if RENT closed! I just couldn't possibly comprehend if I heard "RENT CLOSING" -I think I would die.

I think it's going to be:
Millie
Boy from Oz
LSOH
Chicago
Gypsy

I'm very surprised that Chicago is still out there. RENT will be closing sooner than later I think. They can't just keep throwing "stars" into the cast to get people to come see it. Its had a terrific run, so it should close with some dignity. Is Millie doing poorly since Susan Egan has been in there? And whats going on with BFO?

Wicked took in over $1M last week, so I don't understand how it could possibly be "in trouble". The smallest grosses for musicals were Rent at $390k, (the show paid for itself years ago, so unless it costs a lot to run, I don't see it closing soon), and Avenue Q at $425k, but the attendence was 98% with an average ticket price of $68. With the smallest capacity house for a musical, Ave Q is probably doing as well as the producers could have hoped.

My guess are:

TMM
Gypsy
Chicago
Fiddler (not sure about this one, i heard mixed reviews)
Aida

RENT will stay for awhile longer, with Spice Girls and Boy Bands being characters (who else read that thing about Drew Lachey being Mark in the fall! AAAH!) it will last for awhile. Then when they announce the closing all the RENTheads will come back and keep it open for awhile

Though scattered and divided we are still its heart...AIDA SEPTEMBER 5th, 2004...one more longing backward glance... I AM NOW "TGIF!"

everyone keeps posting that Millie will be closing in the near future, yet it keeps selling 80% and making money. I'm not sure how a producer could pull that with it at 80%?

just my opinion

I think Millie and Wonderful Town would be the next to go.

I honestly don't see Rent going anywhere in the next two years. I think they're going to push to hit the ten year mark (April 2006) as best as they can. Since they never actually lose money (they make back running cost at around 50%, even with the current average ticket price), there really isn't any purpose in closing it, since it's still bringing in money. The past few weeks have been high grosses as well, so it really isn't struggling as much as everyone likes to think.

I think all of the posts about WICKED being in trouble were jokes...unless I missed something...

I agree with Thegirlinthefrock about RENT. Even if a closing notice is posted (which I can't imagine happening in the near future, even though I'm sort of hoping it will), RENTheads from all over will flock to the show and it will have to extend.

I do hope the show ends with a bang though, instead of it overstaying its welcome until no one wants to see it anymore. Moneywise I don't think there's any reason for it to close, but it won't do the show justice to drag it out like a big joke.

Hey guys I've never really posted on this board...but after reading stuff, especially about Millie, I had to...

Millie has to be closing soon...and I'm a fan, but come on. It's a huge cast and a huge set...it's not inexpensive to run (like Rent...which I also agree should go before it out-stays its welcome). But look at Millie's stats from Playbill:

Thoroughly…Millie
(Marquis) $494,239 8,480 0 8 1,578 $58.28 67.2%

It's only at 67% attendance...and has been floating around that area since Sutton left...realistically it's not going to be around that much longer (though it should last through the summer). I think it's a bit foolish for people to say Wicked (which is consistantly in the top 5 grossers of the week) will close soon. It's not the best show out there, but it's got staying power...for a while.

I doubt Wonderful Town will last past summer. When I saw it this past Sunday the Mezzanie was pretty empty. And being that the Conga number will probaly be their Tony number; I don't think that broadcast (usually a bump for boxoffice) would help. Rent should go soon and live on in college and community productions. However; I think Little Shop will be the firtst to go.

Ever since I was eleven years old I have never wanted anything more than to be in RENT on Broadway. At first I wanted to be Mimi, but judging by the way they keep casting her to look just like Daphne Rubin-Vega, the dream was killed. So I settled for Maureen. I'll tell you, I was obsessed. Still am. So when you say RENT will soon close, it kills me. Not because I don't believe it, but because I know it's true. There are plenty of roles for me when I become a huge Broadway star (rolls eyes), but it will just never, ever be the same for me. Ever.

Once again, let's look at the shows based on their operating or break-even costs and not their percentages...Little Shop is more than covering expenses and is doing well. No matter how many Tony Awards it wins or does not win, it will be around for a while. I remember the disgruntled Ripley people, who thought it would be closed by now depite the 9-10 great reviews reported by Variety. The word of mouth is excellent outside of Manhattan where FAMILIES buy tix. Let us not forget the elitists who all backed Passion over Beauty & The Beast. Which show is still running 10 years later? Jobs, jobs, jobs..... Updated On: 4/7/04 at 10:43 PM

I guess you are right. Maybe it will be Wonderful Town first. But I don't think any of the new productions will close till after Tonys.
