Lol yay_gerb! By the way, I LOVE your avatar!!! What was with Alice's performance... she was extremely off beat at first. Her acceptance speech scared the sh*t out of me.
How was BE's performance any less awkward than N2N's? To anyone who hadn't seen the show before, it made no sense and came off...a little incestuous. I'm saying this as someone who liked both shows when I saw them.
<<<< The only consolation was that Billy's performance was less then spectacular.

Will preface by saying (again) that I was pulling for "N2N", but I like "BE" as well-- That being said, the "BE" performance was terrible !!!
Agreed.

BILLY is the best musical of the season. NORMAL won the awards it deserved (though I would have given it lighting, as well).
Biggest problem with NORMAL is the direction. But that's a discussion for another time.

Billy Ellitott didn't deserve anything but choreography (although after their perfomance, that's debateable).

" it made no sense and came off...a little incestuous."
That's actually what the people I watched the Tonys with and knew nothing about NtN thought that hah. But I still loved it.
Zoneface, are you kidding me? That's brilliant. Not only did they end Act 1 (In the show) with a beautiful dance, but it's beautifully directed and choreographed. It's just great. I'm sorry you couldn't see the brilliance, or didn't connect with it. But it's great. So chill.

I haven't seen Billy Elliot, but I could certainly believe if it's of about equal quality to Next to Normal in a lot of ways. I mean the dancing looks AMAZING, and I'm sure it's a great show. So I'm not even so much doubting that it deserved it.
But my problem is that, if Next to Normal deserved it EQUALLY, how is it fair that the bigger show got it simply because of the politics of it, when Next to Normal would have benefited SOO much more from it!? It just makes me so angry.
If Billy Elliot was widely agreed to be faaaar superior to Next to Normal, alright, then I could accept that. But it's NOT. I mean, from everything I understand, it's pretty darn widely agreed they're both amazing show of incredible quality. But Billy Elliot would have been JUST FINE without the Tony. Next to Normal not so much. I mean, I HOPE that the fact they won 3 Tonys will help them some, but it's still going to be a struggle for them to stay afloat. They could have reeally really used that Best Musical win. And for Billy Elliot to have gotten it just because it was the "safer choice" makes me mad.
What? It's just a bunch of people to voting. If the majority of those people liked Billy Elliot MORE than Next to Normal, then that's why. I mean, I don't think they put that much thought into it. Honestly, both shows are doing great at the box office, and Next to Normal won two big awards, so I think they'll be fine.

Billy Elliot is a great show, i saw it both in London and on Broadway, and it has it's fantastic moments, but i just saw Next to Normal last week, and i don't see how Billy could possibly be better. Equal MAYBE, but Next to Normal was so superior in my eyes. I was really sad it lost, although i definitely wasn't suprised by any means.
snl- Honestly, BE is a more solid show with a superior production to N2N. N2N has a problematic book (still) with a wonderful score, great performances, and some beautiful stage pictures. But it still doesn't fit completely. When watching it, I was actually reminded of Follies. It' successes are great, but it's still very flawed. BE, while not as daring its material, is certainly just as strong (and succeeds more as a work) and benefits from a spectacular production.
granted the awards are not to just give one show a boost in sales(n2n), billy elliot really didn't need all of those awards.
but it deserved a lot of them.
Ugh... I was so hoping for Next to Normal to pull an Avenue Q. I was so very disappointed. And I was SO surprised to find out Next to Normal did not win Best Lighting Design. WTF?!
snl89, I see what you're saying. As someone who really enjoyed Next to Normal, I think Billy still deserved to win. I thought it was brilliant in every way: beautifully designed, wonderfully directed and acted, astonishingly choreographed, exquisitely written. I thought it was the best overall musical production of the season.
To those who say Next to Normal should have won for the sole reason that it's an original musical, let's protest some of the greatest musicals ever written (Sweeney Todd, South Pacific, etc.) and take away their Tonys because they were based on previously written material. And then let's ban all movies that are based on previously written material and not allow them to win any Oscars. And then not allow the sale of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer because it, too, is not original. Tell everyone in the recording industry never to sing anything previously sung by another artist. In fact, all copies of Michael Buble's CDs should be burned.

While I knew Billy was going to win, part of me wanted Normal to win JUST to make the broadcast a little more interesting, and throw a wrench into this years awards.

I can't judge because I haven't seen Billy Elliot. (I'm also fairly certain I'd really like Billy Elliot, too.) I was momentarily disappointed that N2N didn't take it, but not enraged or anything. (I might have been enraged if it lost Score, but that's another story.)

I've seen the show and it still comes off a little incestuous.

While I love "You Don't Know/I Am the One," I think they needed to pick a song that would make sense to the audience who doesn't know the show. Either "Another Day" or "Light" would have been great. I think "Another Day" would have made the ticket sales sky rocket. It's up-beat, shows the dysfunction in the family in a quirky way, and features all four in the family.

Mr.Music wins this thread, in my opinion.
I agree. My roommate has never seen the show and thought Riple was a cougar and sleeping with a younger man. Ha!
But, I think it deserved Best Score completely.
I wish they had showcased Jennifer in the opening number instead of "I'm Alive." It's an okay song, but I think "Superboy..." is better.
