Next broadway artist residency

I was reading the article about following Springsteen producers are looking to bring other artists. Wondering what people’s thoughts are who they should bring.

Personally. I’d love a return of Barbra (though she has been rumoured to be the first run in the reopening of the palace theatre) in the same kind of story musical journey as Springsteen.

A return of Liza or Bette Midler. (Bette has recently said she would like to go do smaller concerts scaled way down)

I don’t know that Cher would work well as a small scale show. And it would take away from the Cher Show grosses I would think.

I also heard a few years back that Celine has hired one of the cirque people to join her team. And one of the things he would be responsible for is to create a broadway show but I don’t know if that’s more like a bio musical of her life or a concert setting.

I wonder if Olivia Newton John would have a big enough base to sell consistently.

I mean in a couple years. I’d love for Elton to do a residency talking about his works etc and include his musical works (which he is not covering at all on his farewell)

I had heard Britney Spears was looking for a place to have an East coast residency, but unsure if Broadway was ever discussed.

I’ve seen Celine’s show in Vegas and it’s fantastic. I’d go again in a heartbeat. I’m not sure I could see her doing a smaller venue after that however, I do think a musical based on her life would appeal to many age ranges.

I’ve also most recently seen Elton’s show in Vegas. He did go through a bit of history about each song but at the same time I didn’t find him as personable as Celine so not sure a smaller venue would be good or bad for him. Also, it does sound like he was wants to retire which could change of course but would he want to come back as a nightly show?

I think someone like a Shania Twain could do well with a Broadway residency. She did well in Vegas too but her show is now closed. She also talks about having stage fright so the smaller venue may be perfect for her.

I may wrong, but I don’t think Liza’s health is up to her doing a show. 

Bette maybe, but she just did a Broadway show so not sure she’d be interested. I’m sure it would do great box office however and I think she is capable of going the more intimate route ala Bruce if she chose to although of course she didn’t write most of her well known songs.  

Celine is best suited for Vegas.

I Britney, but she does not belong on Broadway. I had a great time at her Circus tour stop in Tulsa, but she easily lip synced at least 90% of the show. A smaller venue would just highlight her weaknesses. 

I’m a fan of ONJ from back in the day, but she def does not have the fan base to sustain a residency on Broadway. Plus she’s really not doing much more these days than oldies tours and reciting a script between songs without emotional depth at least that was my feeling when I last saw her which admittedly was a while ago. Bruce was also reciting the same script every njght but he reportedly made it seem personal every single night. But alas there aren’t that many Bruces - superstars who seem genuine like someone you’d like to get a beer with and are capable of going deep and intimate. In a show. In a show l. I meant (at least publicly). 

I think Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul Simon Diana Ross and Sting would be intriguing as well as would be Kendrick Lamar who was suggested by someone on another thread. 

As far as Elton, I saw him in an arena concert more than 10 years ago (maybe closer to twenty?) And found him kinda boring, but maybe a more intimate space would be different. 

But I would sell my left testicle (and would likely have to - any idea what those are going for on the black market?) to see Barbra back on Broadway.

I could imagine going to see Dylan on Broadway and coming away having not understood a single word he said all night.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Why don't we try something other than Old White People Sing Their Old White Songs For Rich White Audiences.

Tyler the Creator (who's PBS Tiny Desk Concert you should watch if you have any doubts), Chance the Rapper (<< the video linked for the Same Drugs music video should make anyone/everyone cry), or Kendrick Lamar are the only names I'm interested in.

They would bring a new audience to the theatre and these three men have the highly creative (genius?) minds to pull off a stunning show.

I think to be a viable Broadway residency option the artist would need a catalogue of music well-known to the general public. For those reasons I think Tyler the Creator and Chance the Rapper would not be the right choices at this point in their careers. Who knows if they’ll ever be. They have enough musical integrity to not sell out to make their music more “marketable” although it would be fascinating to see what they did with a Broadway residency. That being said, if you threatened me with a gun to my head I still could not name one of either of their songs. 

Now Kendrick Lamar...damn...that’s intriguing...he has maintained his musical integrity while still entering the public consciousness in a major way. A handful of his songs are well known to the general public and he has that “Bruce” factor - a star (if not superstar) who seems genuine and you’d want to catch a beer with and is capable of putting on a deep and intimate show.

Given Rap/Hip Hop’s proclivity toward homophobia and misogyny I doubt these artists would be welcome on Broadway. Look at what just happened with Kevin Hart and the Oscars.

You obviously aren’t well acquainted with these artists. That’s not who they are. Be careful of painting with too broad a brush.  Tyler may even be part of the LGBTQ community.

I also think Dolly Parton would be a great option she has so many stories and writes her stuff.

I personally would prefer to see a multigenerational star who uses the space as a reflective evening on their full life and career.

I think Neil Young and Bob Dylan would do well here as well

Or Paul McCartney.

I know that Julie Andrews can not sing to her former glory but. I wonder if a 70-90 minute evening of her talking about her stories and have little sing talk moments would work

Why don't we try something other than Old White People Sing Their Old White Songs For Rich White Audiences.   ---   I pick up a seething antipathy in this post- and I do not like it. Whatever artist decides to do a residency, many factors will enter that decision- and I hope race and age are not two of the factors.

Britney mimes her whole show.

Janet Jackson mimes her whole show (and always has).

Dolly now mimes her whole show.

Madonna SHOULD mime her whole show, but mimes just half of it.

Celine uses tapes that kick in once the hard work is needed.

Streisand has sounded pretty shocking live for the last 20 years.

This is all by the by I guess considering Springsteen, Dylan, Young etc have never been able to sing so their horrid live vocals are completely acceptable (they are men after all) to their 'stan' base. McCartney can carry a tune, but beyond that...

I saw Elton and Dianna in Vegas earlier this year and both their voices are shot. Elton literally sounded like a (very boring) foghorn honking for 2 hours. Olivia still sounds good, but she doesn't have the fanbase to sustain a long run or those prices, I think I paid 30 bucks in Vegas.

Beyonce is about the only one who actually has the vocal chops to do it but why would she when she can sell out stadiums?

Most intermediate level Broadway performers can out sing every one of them so why bother x

Based on concert videos I’ve heard of McCartney, his voice appears to be shot too. The reality is female singers are held to a much higher standard than male singers are. Barbara could still sing circles around any male singer listed on this thread but because her voice has changed (her range has shrunk, her voice has deepened) people say her voice is “shot.”

I’d also say that on Madonna’s recent (Rebel Heart) tour, the best moments when it was just her singing with a guitar or ukulele. That being said, a Broadway residency isn’t for her. When she tries to go “small” (I.e. her shorter, less elaborate “clown” shows) the results are mixed and polarizing and a bit odd. I’d go, but it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

Right now we’re only talking about singers, but I think we can even go further than that. What about a Hillary Clinton one woman show where she just talks about her life or the election? Or Oprah, MObama, DiCaprio, Angelina. The list is endless.

Oh. I never did think about that. Yes. I would also love to hear stories or a living autobiography show from someone like Oprah or Leo Dicaprio.
I’d love to see Julia Roberts back but I don’t know that her story or talking points could last over 90 mins
