I don't think this will **** it up at all. While I'd rather see Cynthia reprise her role, Nicole could do quite a beautiful job with it.
Why? Just...why? Love the play, hate the Kidman. *heavy sigh*
Love Kidman, think the play is just so/so. As a film its going to be very much "been there done that." It should have been a Lifetime movie starring Melissa Gilbert.
This will be about as successful as the PROOF film was.
PROOF sucked, and I loved the play.
It's impossible to say that without knowing the rest of the cast or director. Its not going to make any money, for sure, but it could become a critics darling with the right pedigree involved.

Im pretty sure Foster was being sarcastic.
I'd like Cynthia Nixon to do it again but, I do think Nicole will do a great job.
Yes, I was being sarcastic. This is typical Hollywood. Replace a fierce actress (Mary-Louise Parker, Cynthia Nixon) with a frail toothpick (Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman). I'm sorry but Kidman just doesn't come across as a Mom living in Westchester.
P.S. She's producing it too. How convenient:

I know sarcasm.
I'd definitely much prefer Cynthia Nixon reprising her role, as several have already said. Her performance was fantastic, as is the play. Kidman seems a little too melodramatic for this role to me, but hopefully I'm proven wrong. I admittedly haven't seen much of her work.
Foster's comment about Kidman being a "toothpick" actress made me think. I'm really wish Cynthia Nixon could do this. She is a name after all but, not as large as Kidman unfortunately.Kidman is a fine actress though.

At least Kidman can act---it could have been MUCH worse!
It will be interesting to see her take on the role (I enjoyed Cynthia Nixon's performance very much!)
Paltrow, for whatever its worth got raves in London for PROOF on stage. Her notices for the movie were pretty strong too. MLP in addition to not being a movie star is in her 40s. The character is 25. Paltrow was a good choice for the movie, IMO.
P.S. I also think its safe to say, from that press release, that Kidman IS the reason the movie is being made in the first place. It's being made because she wants to play the part. So while it may have been nice to see Nixon recreate her stage role, its not exactly a case of her being over looked for the movie. Without Kidman I doubt any studio would be making a film of this play.

I've never been very fond of Kidman (so cold!), but I saw Dogville recently and really enjoyed her performance. I haven't seen The Hours. There could be much worse casting, although I can totally see why people would prefer that Nixon reprise her role.

I agree--Paltrow was terrific in the film, as was Hope Davis. It was the film itself that was bad.

Anyone who's seen THE HOURS knows that Kidman is capable of a lot more than the studios usually give her.
Kidman was brilliant in THE HOURS and well-deserving of her Oscar. I just think she is all wrong for this particular role.

I realy wish Nixon could have somehow been allowed to repeat her terrific stage performance (as an HBO film, if nothing else), but Kidman will probably be fine.
MB is right. I could definitely have seen this as a Melissa Gilbert Lifetime movie.

I am not familiar with the play, but I have been a fan of Kidman's for quite awhile. After seeing The Hours, Eyes Wide Shut, Dogville, Cold Mountain, I think she's an excellent actress with a lot of integrity.
Plus, she had the sense to divorce Monsieur Cruise. Not that that has anything to do with her talent, but it shows she's a smart one.
I echo the sentiments of most of you guys...very please that it's being done, but disappointed that it will be without Nixon.
I am pleased, however, that Kidman is the one doing it. She's a brilliant actress, and I have no doubt that she will be more than fine.
And for the record, I loved PROOF. Definitely a flawed flim, but Gwenyth gave the finest performance of her career in it and was robbed of an Oscar nomination.
Nixon's teeth are too distracting. Haven't you guys ever watched Sex in the City?
