From the Centerstage Baltimore production of Night Music in 2008.
Whoever orchestrated this "chamber version" should never orchestrate a musical again. This sounds embarrassing.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 5:29pmShe sounds atrocious in these clips. And I was a big fan of her Joanne in Company.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 5:34pmShe always sounds flat and vibrato-less to me in whatever role she blandly tackles.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 6:20pmThe cast is amazing, but how old is Julia Osborne? She looks about 40 and she's playing Anne? I'd kill to see Polly Bergen! I have no idea who keeps casting Walsh. I've never enjoyed her.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 6:28pmI have an audio of this production, and Kate Baldwin singing Everyday A Little Death is amazing. One of my favorite versions ever.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 6:35pmI think Erin Davie's version is now my favorite. It is exquisite. I also think CZJ is such a remarkable actress and it just comes across on the recording. Listening to Barbara Walsh versus CZJ you realize just how talented CZJ is. Catherine's Desiree is just so delicious, full-bodied and full of life. To quote Elaine Stritch, "THATS COFFEE!!!!! THATS COFFEE!!!!!"

I think this cast sounds truly awful (sans Baldwin). Even Bergen sounds like she is completely lost.
The orchestrations are just atrocious.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 6:46pmOh no, I COMPLETELY agree about the rest of the cast and the orchestrations. Kate Baldwin is the only good thing about it. And don't even get me started on Julia Osborne as Anne... TERRIBLE.

^ How the orchestrations SHOULD sound.
Am I allowed to post this on here?

Not knowing the circumstances of this 'chamber' orchestration, I think whomever did this did a fine job. It's nothing great, but I don't really think it's as heinous as some of you are saying. And, for all we know, the orchestrator was only given the very limited and weird combination we hear here.
However I'd like to have a talk with the music director. I doubt the chord at the end of "Glamorous Life" was the best they could have gotten out of those singers.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 10:01pmI saw this production and really liked it. It was my first exposer to Night Music. I had no clue till now that it was Kate Baldwin, she was great. The Petra was also INCREDIBLE.

Petra was Sarah Uriarte Berry. She was about 20 years too old for the role.

I was sitting front row and she didn't look it.
And ljay, did you even see this production? You really have no right to judge this production over a few crappy audios. If you saw this production then say what you will but please don't judge it if you haven't.

That's fine, but Petra is described as a 21-year-old in the libretto.
No I did not see the production, but I think I have the right to judge the orchestrations and vocal performances based on a full audio. I never judged the direction or production elements.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 10:25pmPetra may be described that way, but is she ever referred to that way? I think she could be any age - just sexy. In other words, Helen Mirren could play her - probably better than anyone else.

Posted: 4/17/10 at 10:28pmI think Petra's interaction with Anne, Henrick, and the fact that she is apparently capable of fertility suggests she needs to be relatively young.

The lyrics of "Miller's Son" express her youthfulness to me. "In the meanwhile." "It's a very short day...." "But I'll not have been dead when I die!"
The song is a celebration of being young and living in the moment, in my opinion.
And obviously the authors intended on her being young.

But the actress doesn't have to BE young, she just has to READ young. Berry read very young in NYCO's Cinderella- I was actually shocked when I heard she was going to be a standby in N2N.
