I was reading the "Pirate Queen Snubbed" thread and it made me wonder: What are some other notable Broadway productions (from previous years) that received no Tony Nominations?
are you saying The Pirate Queen was notable?
How is THE PIRATE QUEEN notable?
It's not as if GREY GARDENS got 0 nominations and was something shocking.
It's like saying "ALL SHOOK UP WAS SNUBBED!"
Please.
The one what bugged me was Carrie
Yes the show was a flop but had a lot of great elements to it which should have received nominations(buckley and Hately should have got Nods). The show was a flop though so like the Pirate Queen they just snubbed it altogether
Something tells me you didn't see CARRIE...
Okay for some reason I am thinking that something like Tarzan should have been nominated for something.... It was wasn't it?
Best Lighting
What do you suggest CARRIE be nominated for?

GAG.
Seriously.
Everything about CARRIE is awful. I didn't see the show (as many of it's champions here probably have not), but based on footage, clips, videos, etc. - it's god awful.

This is an uneducated response as I can't think of what else was new to the season of "Carrie", but certainly score. There is quite something promising in that, no?

no·ta·ble (nô'tə-bəl)
Worthy of note or notice; remarkable: notable beauty; sled dogs that are notable for their stamina.
Characterized by excellence or distinction; eminent: formed a commission of notable citizens.
I don't see The Pirate Queen as any of these things. It wasn't even a big enough trainwreck to be any fun as a camp novelty. Boring is not equal to notable no matter how much money was thrown at a show, no matter how many ads or comcasts it was able to run and no matter how many fans it has.
I don't even think CARRIE has a good score.
Some interesting melodies, but overall an underwhelming, mind-blowingly bad score with abominable lyrics.

OK, OK. I'll rephrase the question - strike my oblique reference to PQ. I'll just ask if anybody can think of ANY long-running Broadway musicals that received no Tony nominations.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing you. I just think a lot of folks are giving The Pirate Queen a little too much credit. But that's just my opinion. I think your question is an interesting one.
The entire VICTOR/VICTORIA debacle comes to mind.
well, technically Julie did get a nom.
And Carrie had some very creative lighting. Also, Buckley and Hatley gave good perfs.
I mean they would never win, but at lest nominated.
There were so many flops in the eighties that got no noms. Some of those shows had decent elements that could have been recognized.
But even BIG DEAL and ANYONE CAN WHISTLE got at least 1 nom....
Even Lestat got a costume and supporting actress nomination.
Of course it's up to the Tony nominating committee to decide who they want to nominate, and maybe they really did prefer Spring Awakening's costumes over Pirate Queen's.
The Tony nominations can be a way to acknowledge talented people doing good work, even in shows that don't hold together. Not this time.
I think it depends on your opinion of a show. For example, I thoroughly enjoyed Imaginary Friends a few seasons back and was sad it didn't get any nominations. But I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me on that. So, notable for me, not for many other people. Just an example.

First one that came to mind was THE FROGS.
I thought it was fantastic. It had many good things. The score, the book, Nathan Lane's performance (although not exactly Tony worthy) It was an okay show, and deserved at least one Tony nod.
I think most will disagree with you about The Frogs, NLS.
I despise THE FROGS.

I know, a lot of people didn't like the show. But I think it deserved SOME recognition. I mean, it was Sondheim's first new score on Broadway in years.
