Just because it was Sondheim's first score on Broadway in years doesn't mean it should have been nominated.

Well, Angela Lansbury got a nomination for DEUCE this year only because it's her first Broadway role in years. So why not Sondheim?

I thought that The Frogs Score (Own the CD, never saw the show, was probably terrible like everyone says) was EONS better than the score to Spamalot, so I think that it should have gotten a nomination there.
This year was also a rather slim picking of actresses.
I thought All Shook Up could EASILY have received a couple of Tony noms - for performances, set (that motorcycle effect WAS pretty cool), and yes, I'll say it, even for book. Bash away if you want, but I thought they did a VERY good job of incorporating those songs into the story.

All Shook Up would still be running today if they didn't play the Palace.
"This year was also a rather slim picking of actresses."
No it's not. They just decided to snub the ones that were in bad shows.

All Shook Up's book was a bit of a mess. It's more than just being able to incorporate songs into the story, although it is an important part.
They did an okay job of fitting the songs in, but the problem, in my opinion, was with the plot. There were too many confusing love triangles that it just was ridiculous by the end.
The Vertical Hour, got snubbed this year. I thought Bill Nighy would get nominated, also the set and the lighting.
I'm not surprised neither Les Mis revival nor The Pirate Queen got snubbed. Obviously, the comittee is trying to send Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg messages about reviving a show three years after it closes.
millie - the plot of All Shook Up was basically Twelfth Night - there were even some references to Twelfth Night in the script as I recall - not that most audience members got them. A play that lasted 400+ years - I don't think the plot is THAT confusing...
sorry to burst your bubble munkstrap but i did see carrie in stratford and the show had some of the best lighting at the time as well as 2 fantastic performances.
Carrie had a good score in parts but shouldn't have been nominated , and as much as the set didn't work for the show it was technically brilliant.
The show also had some interesting choreography and thats coming from a dancer.
In All Shook Up, there were so many love triangles/connections that it may have gotten confusing to someone. By the end of the show, the way some people were connected to others just was...stupid; therefore I thought the book was weak.
Muscle... I agree. That tree was simply put, amazing. :) I'd hoped Andrew Scott might sneak in for featured. He owned that role.

I'm a SOndheim fanatic and Frogs is no masterpiece but I am kinda surprised it didn't get a nom for design and especially score even if it was a limited engagement and seen as a disapointment.
However would the original 1974 score be counted or just the new songs (I forget how that works?) cuz I think none of the new songs except maybe Ariadne stand out but the chorale work in Evoe and the title song from the original production are breathakingly gorgeous. (I suppose this makes Frogs Sondheim's first score since ACW to appear on Broadway without a nom?)
What was up against Carrie? I think the score does deserve a nomination--it's often wildly inappropriate with some hideous lyrics (but so have had many winning scores) but the music--the slow songs as well as the oh so 890s pop stuff is often really pretty great. But I think a show being such a famous flop--even so close to its closing--obviously taints its chances as well.

The longest running show I can think of that garnered zero nominations is the 1976 revival of Oh! Calcutta! which played 5,959 peformances.
However, I am not totally sure about this -- so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Back to All Shook Up, I'd say David Rockwell's set design, Donald Holder's lighting design and Michael Gibson and Stephen Oremus' orchestrations were worthy of nominations. I also was fond of a few of the performances, but that was a pretty competitive year ...
you are right enjolras, Oh calcutta got no nominations.

It may be that CARRIE did not get nominated because so few Tony voters got to see it. Some shows that have very short runs are eliminated for that reason. (METRO was one.)
