Number of times you've seen a specific Broadway show.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 11:00amLike others, I'm amazed at how many times you guys have seen some of these shows. I've seen "Cats," "Wicked," and "The Lion King" twice each, but those are the only shows I've seen more than once. I only saw "Cats" and "The Lion King" twice because they were part of a season ticket subscription I had. I generally prefer to see new shows as opposed to seeing previous shows again. I am, however, not opposed to seeing "Wicked" again!

We've done this before! But somehow I am not getting the urge to mock or bellyache.
Les Miz: 55
Phantom of the Opera: 16 (?)
Jersey Boys: 12
Spelling Bee: 12
Rent: 8
Big River (DW Revival): 5
...and a host of other ones.
Do Equity tours count? They do in my book, or I'd have almost nothing.

I think it depends...
I know that when I was a teenager and "Rent" was just the biggest deal, I really wasn't interested in anything else, and the only other shows I saw were things my parents dragged me to. Now that I look back, I couldn't be more appreciative that they took me to other things, especially because they included shows like Ragtime, and other productions I would have never seen on my own at that age.
Now as an adult, I see everything. There are very specific shows (as you can see, I named Sweeney and Company as the other two I've seen multiple times) that I've been really hooked on recently, but otherwise, I don't just consistently see the same things. It has to be a really special show for me to spend my time and money so many times.

Regarding seeing other things, yes I do. I'm down to 4 shows playing right now that I haven't seen (and want to see...Deuce and Old Aquaintance don't count)...well, 5 if I count Gypsy, and have at least sketched out plans to see those over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly? I was in Winston-Salem, NC for a family reunion over Father's Day weekend, and it was the first weekend in well over three months I hadn't seen at least one show. I about went into withdrawls. (Only having the 110 cast recording saved my sanity!)

Act0r721, totally legit (and interesting) question! I'm also one of the ones who latched on to one or two shows when I was younger (i.e. junior high) and didn't want to see much else. Those were Cats (yes, yes, shut up) and later Phantom -- and I think I saw those maybe 7? 8? times each, over the course of the past 12 or so years. Because back then, seeing a show twice in one year was a LOT!
But for the "era" of my record-breaker (Bat Boy) -- my theatre-going had a lot to do with the fact that I was both (a) in college, where my dorm was about ten blocks from the theatre, and (b) working at a ticketing agency. So I got lots of freebies, in addition to student discounts up the wazoo. I think that for those few years, I must've seen nearly all the shows that opened on Broadway, and perhaps half of the major off-Broadway things. Ah, the good old days... :)

I guess the most for me is the "Sweeney Todd" revival and (blush) "The Phantom of the Opera," both three times.
In Sweeney's case, I went three times with three different people, so it was more about sharing the experience with them than me saying, "I HAVE to see this show again."
With Phantom, they were really spread out -- the first time was in 1992 when I was just a kid, the second was in 1996 with my sister who had never seen it before and then most recently last year with my obnoxious roommate who demanded that I go see it with him.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 2:51pmThe most I've ever seen a show was Sweeney Todd (Revival) which I saw three times.

I've seen Rent 7 times on Broadway, and a further 24 times in the UK.
And yes, I have seen other shows as well. It's just that Rent is special to me, so when I go to NY on holiday I'd consider it a waste if I didn't see Rent at least once.
re: Number of times you've seen a specific Broadway show.#41
Posted: 7/10/07 at 2:57pmI've seen Hairspray on Broadway 45 times. Like others who've posted here, I also see other shows. I just like to revisit my favorite from time to time, especially when new performers are brought in. It also never fails to lift my spirits when I've had a crappy week.

Well, if we are counting London, Toronto and National Tours, my list looks something like this:
Miss Saigon - 5
The Pirate Queen - 3
Martin Guerre (original London - Jan '97) - 3
Rent - 3
Les Mis - 2
Tommy - 2
I am sure I am forgetting something. I wish I could say I have seen Wicked - at all! I have tried the lottery 4 times (Toronto and Broadway) with no success. I am headed to LA this week so I am hoping to get to see it there - keeping my fingers crossed.

Someone saw Rent EIGHTY-EIGHT times???? I hope you didn't pay full price...
I'm appalled at all of these people who see their favorite shows again and again. I've never seen a Broadway show more than once, and no matter how much I like a show, I would never see it with the same cast. I just don't get into the city enough to see a show again and again. I know there are shows like Les Mis you need to see again and again (trust me, I know...) but I can't imagine seeing it over twenty times. Once you've surpassed... idk... thirty or forty viewings, doesn't a show lose its power?
I don't see shows multiple times because I don't have the $$ or transportation into the city, and I understand why someone would see a show two or three times... but there has got to be a limit. I'm not insulting anyone who has seen Rent or Les Mis 40+ times, but doesn't it get boring after a while? I accept your way of life, but I'm just shocked people see shows so many times. For me, variety is the spice of life...
