ODG No! VARIETY: Remakes of "Midnight"! & "The Women"!

"Midnight" is 1 of my all-time fav films. Couldn't we just skip the remake w/Witherspoon & jump to the Broadway musical stage? Arndt to rewrite.

Colbert, Amichi & Barrymore were perfect in this film to the utmost degree.

& while we're at it, I wish they'd keep their cotten-pickin' hands off THE WOMEN:

"Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing and Candice Bergen have either signed or are near committing to star in a contemporized version of the George Cukor-directed film, which Picturehouse will distribute domestically next year."

THE WOMEN writer attached is Diane English.

Is there a musicalized version of THE WOMEN?

Lord deliver me....

Milla, praying she'll be pleasantly surprised, but doubtful

This remake of THE WOMEN has been "coming soon" for years now. I remember when it was Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Uma Thurman and Meg Ryan who had all "signed". This is one of those movies I'll believe exists when I'm actually able to buy a ticket.

An excellent policy on anything adapted from a play, musical, or especially comic book.

Oh, and have you ever seen the original movie of "The Women"? A remake can only improve.

yeah..."The Women" remake has been in pre-production and many, many drafts for over 10 years. English' name has been attached all along, and some of the actresses announced have rotated out.

English was responsible for Murphy Brown, Love and War (a favorite of mine, with Joanna Gleason!) and Double Rush on television in the 90's (although Murphy may be older than 90's?)and that script has been making the rounds.

And yes...THE WOMEN was turned into a musical. Alas a 1956 MGM movie musical titled THE OPPOSITE SEX, which starred June Allyson, Dolores Gray, Ann Miller, Joan Collins, Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell, Carolyn Jones and Agnes Moorehead.

There is a movie musical version of "The Women" from 1956 which is one of my guilty pleasures called "The Opposite Sex". It stars June Allyson, Dolores Gray, Joan Collins, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller and Agnes Moorehead. Very much worth the rental.

I don't think The Woman would do well these days. Especially with TV shows like Desparate Housewives. The topic isn't as big as it was back in 1939. Also, you can't get any funnier than Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosiland Russell. Let those "jungle red" claws come out!

I dont remember The Opposite sex as a musical, more like a comedy with music. I think there was about 2 songs in it.

Its a crime to get Dolores Gray and Ann Miller in a movie together and get them to do absolutely nothing.

Paulyd -- though it was marketed as a 'movie musical', you're absolutely right in regards to the film not really being a 'musical'. The 'musical' numbers didn't advance the plot in any way, they were all 'performance' numbers for the characters.

Here's a list of the songs/numbers performed in the film:

"The Opposite Sex"
Written by Sammy Kahn, Nicholas Brodszky
Performed over the opening credits by Dolores Gray
Performed during "The Psychiatrist" musical sketch with Dick Shawn, Jim Backus,
Joan Collins and Carolyn Jones

"Young Man With a Horn"
Written by Sammy Kahn, Nicholas Brodszky
Performed and danced by June Allyson, with horn solo by Harry James

"A Perfect Love"
Written by Sammy Kahn, Nicholas Brodszky
Performed by June Allyson (singing voice by: Jo Ann Greer)

"Yellow Gold"
Written by Sammy Kahn, Nicholas Brodszky
Performed by Jerry Antes, Joan Collins and Carolyn Jones

"Rock and Roll Tumbleweed"
Written by Ralph Freed, George E. Stoll
Performed by Jeff Richards

"Now Baby Now"
Written by Sammy Kahn and Nicholas Brodszky
Performed and danced by June Allyson and male chorus

The Opposite Sex, while fun, is not a good movie. The music is pretty negligable. Also, they made the HUGE mistake of putting men in it.
Yes, we do need a third vampire musical.--Little Sally, Gypsy of the Year 2005.

Brodyfosse - Thanks for that. I was just pissed off that they wasted such a great array of talent, but i suppose MGM at that time were trying to venture away slightly from musical as much of their musical output in the couple of years before The Opposite of Sex were bombing.

I personally like most of the MGM Cinemascope movies. It's Always Fairweather is one of my favs

Just think of the musical they could make of the women....

I am sure there are some of us out there who would love to dream cast this show!

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
