Balls, schmalls.
It sounds like enough of the financing is pretty much in place, so that if the NYTW production works, the sets can start construction.
If it is a dud downtown, an uptown move would be unlikely.

Posted: 9/23/11 at 6:23pmI remember seeing the movie a couple years ago, while the music was great, I don't remember the plot being much of a focus. But I am sure they will or have reworked the plot. And then again people won't go to see Once for the plot.

Posted: 9/23/11 at 6:35pmaw, why? If it were anything else, it would have been too sappy or depressing, depending on which way they took it. I'm stoked for this show. The movie was so personal, and I think a large part of its magic came in that it was a bit of a roman a cleff for Irglova/Hansard making these songs and falling in love in real life. It'll be interesting to see if the same intimacy can be pulled off onstage with different leads. Also, Hansard's singing style (HUGE Frame fan here) is so unique, I hope they find someone who can do justice to it.

Posted: 9/23/11 at 6:38pmBecause I saw no valid reason for her to return to her husband when everything indicated that he was a total jerk, she had already left him, and was clearly in love with Hansard. IMO the only reason she returned to her husband is because if the two leads had ended up together, it would have ruined the movie's indie cred.

Posted: 9/23/11 at 8:30pmYou don't know why she was estranged from her husband. And how is it wrong that she got back together with the father of her child? And Hansard still loved his g/f. Sure, they both loved each other, but it was merely temporary. It's what they needed at the time.

Posted: 9/23/11 at 10:09pmThat's how I see it as well. It's what the song 'Once' is about. It was a momentary act of creation, but to sustain it for too long would be irresponsible or destructive. Or just simply wouldn't have worked out in the end, as happened in real life. Luckily for all of us though, the band made it while the couple didn't, and they're still playing together!

Posted: 9/24/11 at 10:40amYeah, I agree with the above, I love the film, and it's ending, I think, was the right way to end it. It was so real, and not a Hollywood movie with a Hollywood ending. I'm excited for the show, I just really hope that it does the movie justice and they don't mess it up.

Posted: 9/24/11 at 11:37amPart of what I loved about the film was that Girl could not step away from her self-sabotaging ways. She breaks Guy out of his pity cycle but falls right back into her own. Success is there for the taking and she leaves it to let someone else be happy again. It feels real coming from everything we know about the character in the film. I think The Simpsons skewered (and supported) the reasons for the ending quite nicely in their Ireland episode.

Posted: 9/24/11 at 4:07pmI'm very excited for this - the movie is one of my favorites of all time. I was satisfied with the end, too. The girl can never quite commit to the guy in the way he can to her - even when she *SPOILER ALERT* tells him she loves him, it's in Czech, and she won't translate for him. In the end, it's not surprising that she can't drop everything and run away with him.

fwiw, i think sporkgoddess' points all are valid.
true, we don't know the specifics about why Girl was estranged from her Czech boyfriend, but the movie paints an unambiguously unflattering picture of him.
additionally, Guy wasn't completely over his old girlfriend, but i thought it was pretty clear there were only embers, not flames. (not that there's anything wrong with embers ...)
finally, while the ending would have been unbearably formulaic if Girl and Guy had gotten together, that doesn't negate the point about maintaining indie cred.
and as for the comment about getting back together for the sake of the child: how's the weather back there in 1956???
