I was going to say that too! But I was afraid people would jump on me.
She really does though.

"I'm sick of this "I hate the stage show but this I like" crap. It looks like the stage production on film (and that's not a bad thing in my book). Sam director, same songs, nearly the same costumes and locations."
I think the reasons you listed are exactly why I like it better on film than stage. I HATE(!!!) the stage show, but the movie looks perfect, almost like it was designed to be a movie rather than a stage show.
Maybe this can be a hint to future producers of jukebox musicals, make movies and LEAVE OUR STAGES ALONE!

MAMMA MIA is a financial megahit and an audience pleaser.
So I believe the stage at the Winter Garden doesn't want to be left alone.

What's wrong with something lighthearted and fun for families to go and see?
Is there something wrong with that? I think there's room for that on Broadway. Not EVERYTHING has to be so serious.

Posted: 12/13/07 at 9:15pmI just watched. IT looks cute. Is the sound quality really horrible for anyone else?

Wow- jacobtsf- it amuses me that someone with a quote from a FRANK WILDHORN show would complain about the quality of ANYTHING to appear on a Broadway stage! If MAMMA MIA is cotton candy, Wildhorn's oeuvre is more like deep fried pork rinds- indigestible and known to cause physical harm to those with discerning palates.
But to each their own poison....

It is personal taste. I do not see anything enjoyable in Mama Mia. It might be because I am not an ABBA fan, or some other reason, but it (and most jukebox musicals) just are not my cup of tea. I believe theatre needs some type of creation, and the producers of MOST jukebox musicals avoid creation at every chance. They try to string extremely loose plots around music that has no connection whatsoever. It is the rare show like Jersey Boys (which I consider to be a play with music NOT a musical) that makes me see that jukebox musicals can be something more if there is creativity.
SOME (and that is a big SOME) Wildhorn stuff is very good (His revisions are, I believe, much better than the original product). He uses solid source material but also lets his and his collaborators' creativity affect his shows. Now, I am the first to admit that the Wildhorn shows that have appeared on Broadway have been crap, but, having worked on and directed Wildhorn shows myself I believe that they were crap because of choices the design team made, and that the shows do have the possibility to be great.
I am sorry if I have upset anyone, but I believe theatre, even at the most basic, needs to touch people in some way that no other medium can. Mama Mia did not do that to me and was the start to a menace that has been destroying the quality of Broadway (once again, this is all my opinion, and I am not forcing you to take it as fact).

If you right-click zoom-in, it makes it bigger.
This by far is my favorite of the 2 trailers -- especially since we get to see Meryl sing as well as her surprise meeting of the '3 possible dads'.

Posted: 12/13/07 at 9:59pm"Hate to tell ya, MAMMA MIA was NOT the first jukebox musical" I know that, but it was the one that, because of the success and the lack of creativity, created the craze we have now.

First off Jacob, it's "Mamma Mia!"
And just because Mamma Mia! didn't touch you doesn't mean that it hasn't to thousands of audience members around the world. I'd venture to say it's touched the hearts of one or two people more than The Scarlett Pimpernel did...
I realize you're intitled to your own opinion, but why take the effort to bash a show that you hate? Why not just be indifferent?

Posted: 12/13/07 at 10:30pmI did not take the effort, others attacked me for my views. I then reminded them that it was only my view.

Posted: 12/26/07 at 12:14pmI am just curious if the trailer was in front of Charlie Wilson's War. Does anybody know if it is? Because that was the movie that I thought it would be in becuase Tom Hanks is a producer.
