Any chance the original staging will go back on tour? I'm sure they could figure out a way to make it work and make it work for many different venues.

Oh they could absolutely make it work. It did for about 20 years. Mackintosh's current explanation of "It's too hard to tour" is just a way to make people think there's a real reason beyond pushing his own name in front of the current tour, and really allow him to emphasize his involvement.
Will it go back on tour? I have no idea. Not unless Cameron loses the ego or rights to the show.

The current tour is very disappointing. I hope he comes to his senses and sends the original staging out again once this one ends.

On a sidenote, anyone know if the just announced new Paris production is the old or new version?

The new tour is absolute trash. It's cheap and tacky.

I think it's the original. I sincerely hope so at least.

People like to say that all the time. Tackiness aside, this tour is anything but cheap. A 38 member cast on a full production contract and 20+ trucks aint' cheap.

If the new version made a lot of money, then I'm not sure why they'd send out the old one because fan nostalgia is hardly enough of a reason.

I think the "cheap" part comes in with the costumes and sets. The original ones are lavishly designed, with one of Carlotta's dresses alone costing upwards of $30,000, and it looks like it. The current tour uses very stripped down versions of the old costumes, if they are used at all. In most cases they redesigned them to be vaguely inspired by the original costumes, but are most definitely cheaper for the production to purchase and unfortunately look a lot cheaper. It's visually cheap and tacky.
It also comes from Cameron talking about the new tour in interviews when it first launched in the UK discussing how much cheaper it is to tour the new one, with the simplified sets.

Well it sure does look and feel cheap. It amazes me that such a massive and expensive production can look and feel so low budget.

I didn't think it looked cheap at all. I actually said that it looked expensive.. I actually loved the tour.

I liked the "drum" with the steps that came out of it, but the rest fell flat for me. The worst was Masquerade! One of my favorite numbers and it was kind of a bummer without the grand staircase and poor staging.

don't forget the abortions that the masquerade crowd were wearing. Maria Bjornson would be rolling in her grave

I worked in Maria's office in 1986- indeed she would. She would also be taking VERY strong issue if she were alive.

Her estate definitely took strong issue with it. When the tour started in the UK (And I think they tried again in the US) they marketed it as having all of her original designs intact. Clearly that's not the case, and someone wrote a letter to her estate letting them know, and within a couple of weeks all of the marketing taglines that said it used her designs had suddenly vanished. They have finally incorporated some of the original costumes in, but they have an odd tendency to strip them down a little and simplify them.
