Does anyone think its about time for a new revival of Oliver!? The last one was more than 30 years ago.
Wasn't there one on the West End somewhat recently (with a reality show)? I also seem to recall reports of various plans over the past few years.
It certainly is a popular and solid show (with some finesse around Fagin's portrayal and Nancy's abuse). But I think this is one of those shows, like The Music Man, where the film is so strong that it's hard for a revival to work in its shadow.
I believe Cameron Mackintosh owns the professional rights. It would have to be his production.
Didn't he want to bring his last revival over about a decade ago, but couldn't get any equity concessions for the large amount of children in the cast? Instead he sent out a non-equity tour as I remember.

I saw a national tour of that Mackintosh production. In fact, we had just done a "Junior" version of it at our school and were able to take our kids to go see it.
There was a production of Oliver at the drury Lane here in Chicago and it was fantastic!
Just come over to the UK if you want to see OLIVER. It's revived literally every four years, just in the West End, and I don't think it ever stops touring somewhere in the provinces. I think it's been established that it's too expensive to do the show on Broadway properly because of current union requirements regarding children and their pay scale. In the UK, children are under a contract with much lesser pay than the adults.

No thanks. I have my memories of the OBC and can always throw on the movie. Just imagine I'd be disappointed with the casting. Can you see a Jackman/Fagin, Crowe/Bill? Or Nathan Lane as Fagin? Just don't want to deal with that for my favorite musical.
Did you see Georgia Brown play Nancy? I'd love to hear any memories if you did, she's one of my favorites!
The original was one of the first Broadway shows I ever saw. Brown was great . The whole show was fantastic. It really spurred my interest in theater. Unfortunately, over the years, that interest has diminished greatly. The last 5 years or so that interest took the biggest hit. Oh well, I have a century of memories.
I was thinking of this the other day. What happened to the transfer of the UK 2009 revival?
A revival is long overdue.
I don't know why Mackintosh hasn't brought it over here yet.

The last London revival closed five years ago and, at the time, Mackintosh flirted with bringing it to Broadway. My understanding is that, when Lionel Bart was down and out, he sold all of his rights to Oliver! to Max Bygraves who later sold them to Mackintosh. So yes, Mackintosh owns all rights to Oliver!

Yes. I was young so my memory is slim. But I do remember Clive Revill. My most vivid memory is seeing the kids looking out from behind the curtain prior to the opening number. Like Mr. Roxy, this spurred my interest in theater and captivated me forever.
How could I forget Clive Revill's Fagin? He was fantastic

It's such a pity no-one uses the original Sean Kenny set - it was one of the great wonders of the theatrical world.
Graeme Campbell and Patti LuPone in the ill-fated Broadway revival of Lionel Bart's "Oliver".

Mr. Roxy - if we're old enough to remember the OBC of Oliver, I'm just happy to be able to remember how to spell "Oliver."
