Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

The first Friday evening and Saturday matinee performances of Oliver! have been cancelled at ridiculously short notice. Apparently they need another couple more days to rehearse.

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I've had the email too:

"Dear Patron,

The Producers have advised us that, with regret, the following performances of Oliver! at Theatre Royal Drury Lane have been cancelled:

Friday 12 December 2008 7.30pm

Saturday 13 December 2008 2.30pm

Due to the complexity of the production and the need to safely rehearse 150 children with the adult company of 30 actors, the producers have decided that they need an extra few days to rehearse.

As you have booked tickets for one of the performances above we have refunded you in full and invite you to rebook for an alternative date online at .......

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."

Well, I am not happy about that. However, as the only thing available in the near future was a premium seat I did blag a free upgrade. At least I'm going on a Jodie night, I wonder how many people won't be able to re-book for months ahead or will end up with the alternate Nancy.

I wonder what the real reason is - technical problems, Gwion's appaling acting on children in need? We will have to wait and see.

A good friend of mine is a swing on the show and the set is the problem not rehearsal time!

* that 'Wicked' art work is the very first printed logo for the show. I have 3 of those window cards and they are very, very rare- I hope your looking after that one LP!

There will be so many annoyed people. I don't know how far ahead it is sold out (or near) that it will be hard for the people affected to see it again soon.
They should all go see Sunset Boulevard instead (but I don't think they'd fit)

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

It is solid until the 2nd week in January then just Mon and Tue tru till April!
Lots of tears pouring down Drury Lane me thinks!

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I assumed it would be for technical reasons rather than anything else. My comment about Gwion was meant to be tongue in cheek. I make no bones that he wouldn't have been my choice for the role. However, I don't see the likes of ALW and CM making such a massive mistake. I'm just not sure a boy that was born and raised in a workhouse in Dunstable (Bedfordshire) would have a broad Welsh accent.

Not too surprised that C. Macintosh pulled a couple of shows, as I understand the man is very fastidious when it comes down to his productions, the most successful producer in theatre history, he does not only produce, but will give another dimension to the production.

A member of this thread remembers standing on the pavement 23 years ago, because of a canceled first preview!

I admire this man, I understand he is a gentleman on and off stage and where did it all start for him?

Sweeping the stage where his latest production is opening.

Good luck to him, no one deserves the success more than he does!

He is a charming and very generous man - when things are going well! When things aren't - well... one doesn't want to think!

I am sure this production will be amazing; it certainly was in 1994, and this one will be better a second time round! I can't wait!

People shouldn't be upset... it's a PREVIEW... in affect, it's an open rehearsal - so, one must expect problems. But, I can see the annoyance if you're excited about seeing the show, and then not being able to see it few months down the line. 5000 people will certainly be angry.

You know this. I know this. All Joe and Jane Onceayear know is that they paid up to £65/ticket for a canceled performance.

Sorry, strongly disagree, if the tickets were half price or something then fair enough, but if a customer is paying full price they have every right to expect the proper product. Its not their problem the show isnt ready.

what a dumb comment, yes its a preview but people are still paying out a lot of money to see a show. The regular Joe Bloggs has no idea what a preview is.
If they want it as a rehearsal then they done charge so much money for the watching it

If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I like the way they use the keywords "children" and "safety"

"Due to the complexity of the production and the need to safely rehearse 150 children with the adult company of 30 actors, the producers have decided that they need an extra few days to rehearse"

Basically negating any response to just petty complaints from child killers; when surely a more accurate response would be:

"despite the fact that we have had a lengthy rehearsal period and were quite aware of the complexity of the technical issues with this production as we're basically breathing new life into an old production through the power of TV we did not leave enough money or time in the budget/schedule for contingency and have now cocked-up....

...But hey it's only a full price preview and have you idiots actually read the T&C's on a ticket, basically you've got less rights than a North Korean (ask the Dr Who fans round the corner) so get in line to rebook and enjoy the trains and hotels you're now having to waste at your own expense.

Oh & stop bothering us as we've got a very large advance to count....."

Sister, hitting the nail on the head as usual!

Bearing in mind that this production has toured (albeit in a limited way)there should be no excuse for this- especially with such a genius producer at the helm.

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

Methinks PoL would like to give up the day job and become a producer himself.

Mesometimesthinks I would too; my alternative pseudonym, should "Scripps" have been unavailable, was Leo Bloom.

But then I realised I would have to visit Little Old Lady Land, when I'm not even inclined to visit Little Old Man Land. So, daydream over, back to the contracts and spreadsheets.

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I would sure like to be a Producer, but sure its not that easy.

I do believe that Cameron, started his career sweeping the stage at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

The bloke has got a nose for success, only shows to do amazingly well in New York from the Lord (ALW) are Cats and Phantom of the Opera, produced by whom? The last Mega-hits by the Lord are Cats and Phantom of the Opera, his musicals since Phantom , could be said to of done very poor.

Cameron's vision has transformed theatre in America and here and all round the world, if it was not for Cameron Musical theatre would be a much poorer place, the gents has brought me many hours of pleasure, he is known as a producer, but also you could call him 'assistant director' as he puts immense input to his shows.

Do I need to mention Les Miserable and Miss Saigon?

Cameron if you are reading this as I know you do, any chance of a free ticket?

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I met a friend of mine on Friday, who is in the show, in between rehearsals and they said they were told to expect at least the first preview to be taken out as early as the beginning of last week.
They explained to me that even tho yes it is the same set as the Palladium production, now that its at The Lane they have added a lot more to it.
'Oliver!' is the first show to use almost the entire stage at Drury Lane.
They explained that, incorporated into the old set design are a lot of new sliding pieces such as full scale houses etc that take up the entire stage. It is this huge set that has caused the problems so far in the last few days. As they explained what it was like to have to rehearse every single scene 3 times -at least-and a newish set then I began to understand the shear size of the show that Cameron has staged this time around.
I did laugh when told that the company weren't sure who was the director or who was the producer!!
I saw mobile phone footage of the set and it is ******* huge- i was surprised!
I'm still gonna hold out to see the Aussie lady as Nancy.
The cancelled preview yesterday afternoon was made into a half open dress- did anyone go???

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

I saw the set for the Who Will Buy sequence and as awesome as it looks, they don't appear to have thought it through with regards to the audience. The stage is really deep and there were two worryingly fixed looking towers right in the proscenium, narrowing it considerably. I'm hoping those move because with the depth of the stage, from the boxes, slip seats and even the first and last four or so seats in the circles and balcony can see f*ck all except the very front of the stage and the little walkway around the pit.

re: Oliver! cancelled tomorrow and Saturday!!!

Is pretty bloomin good.
The london sets are terrific the whole depth of stage is used.
Lots of moving the floor up and down, the only poor bit is the bridge gets a bit shakey.
Overall very very high production values - orchestra of around 20! Great sets, great costumes, very slick for 3rd night.
The big numbers are wonderful in their old fashioned HUGEness.

Atkinson is a triumph as Faigin, reviewing the situation a total showstopper. Jodie not as irratating as in the park, shes pretty okay apart from as long as reprise.

Sarah Lark is a very bright spot in the huge chorus, the kids are great, especially Dodger, Welsh oliver so so, got better as night progressed.

The Bumble and widow whatsit scenes are not good, just too much, as is part of the undertaker scene, though Julian Bleach is an excellent Sowerberry.
Also thought it a bit ick to have someone actually throw up in oom pah pah.

As reported elsewhere Bill Sykes has something missing, he's got the charisma of a snail so we have no clue as to why Nancy is willing to die to keep him.

Was was up in the balcony so missed a fair bit, but got the overall effect, only could see half an oliver during where is love which isnt good, a foot back and it would have been fine.

Along with 1 oliver 2 of the dodgers were Michael banks and Bet was a Jane Banks
