I think Playbill listed In The Heights as winning, so was going to say a great year for Miranda, but I think I'd trust the official website.

My questions is why is there a Best New Comedy and a Best New Play? Can the Best New Play not be a comedy?

Lol. I was going to link the Playbill article until I noticed they listed In the Heights as winning instead of Kinky Boots.

odd that Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman share the award for Achievement in Music with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

There isn't a separate award at the Oliviers for Orchestrations like there is for the Tonys, so it is an all-encompassing award. It also includes any plays that have extensive music outside the normal realms of sound design, such as Farinelli and the King this year. I would assume that Lady Day would be eligible in this category next year.

Nice that they let Cyndi Lauper sing a song from her new record, followed by True Colors with Michael Ball. Odd, but nice. Not to re-stir the old Matilda rivalry, but I'm glad that Kinky Boots has been so warmly received in London.

Obviously it can be. Indeed Hangmen which won best play is darkly funny. I imagine that London probably has more many more plays and comedies in the running at awards time (than on Broadway) thanks to subsidised theatre like the NT, Royal Court,Donmar and Almeida. Generally, (and I am generalising ) a serious play would be more likely to take the best play award than a comedy so having two awards gives a fairer chance to the pure comedies.
