The news is saying he had a heart attack and has passed away.
Big loss.
Great actor, possibly a better bridge player.

He HAD a heart attack and died. What's confusing?

I hadn't noticed the title. Fixed it. Ever since this site "updated", it makes using it on your phone so much more difficult.
His two connections with the theatre have been playing the role of Nick Arnstein in the film adaptation of Funny Girl, as well as the title role in David Lean's 1965 film adaptation of Doctor Zhivago. What a way to celebrate that film's 50th anniversary, first an epic Broadway musical flop, now we lose Omar Sharif.

Nicky Arnstein, Nicky Arnstein. I'll never see him again.
When Funny Girl came out, the headline in the Cairo newspapers read "Omar Kisses Barbra, Egypt Angry."
When Barbra was asked to comment, she said, "Egypt is angry? You should hear what my Aunt Sarah has to say!"
But the reality is that Omar Sharif did more to foster good Arab-Israeli relations than almost any statesman at the time.

Brilliant in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, fun in FUNNY GIRL, heart-breaking in ZHIVAGO. That's a wonderful legacy. He will be missed.
He had one of the greatest "entrances" in Lawrence of Arabia.
I always thought that his casting in FUNNY GIRL was a bit odd but he was actually very charming, suave and romantic in the role...and he could carry a tune. He did a film with Julie Andrews, The Tamarind Seed in which he was also very good. May he rest in peace.

Ugh, some asshole messed up his Wikipedia entry.
Just posted by Omar Sharif Jr, the grandson of Omar Sharif.
Doctor Zhivago also died of a heart attack. He never disappointed in his films. Omar was a STAR.

I watched the film the other day and that is EXACTLY what I tweeted. That's the way to make an entrance!
We'll see him in his final role later this year, in The Secret Scripture, an adaptation of the Sebastian Barry novel. He filmed his scenes just this past March. Omar Sharif Jr also has a small part, alongside Vanessa Redgrave and Rooney Mara. I liked the book, so something to look forward to.
