I hate when someone takes over a role and thinks that they have to sing it completely different. I understand Sarah wanting to put her own spin on it, but that doesnt mean that the vocals have to completely suffer. That was one horrible clip...
See what I mean? I think we have found the flaw...
I had a ball playing the Carol Burnett/Sarah Jessica part!
As much as I love SJP, and even though I did enjoy that Tony clip, she did seem a little off-kilter. some parts seemed like they hurt like hell to pull off, like the "...because I'm actually, terribly timid.....and HOOOORRRRRRIBLY shy". It sounds like her vocal chords going straight out the window.
I wish they had one of the Carol Burnett TV productions of the show on DVD. I only saw half of the Tracey Ullman Disney version, so I missed hearing her version of "Shy" (my favorite song from the score) but I did somewhat enjoy "Happily Ever After". But she wasn't a good fit. More like Tracey playing herself rather than an unfit princess. But that's the joke I guess.
The great Buster Keaton starred in the original tour for a long time as the Silent King.
How fricking appropriate.

Tracy was excellent!

I didn't think Tracy Ullman was that bad.
Sarah Jessica Parker, on the other hand... holy goodness, why did she ever get cast in that show??

I like the SJP CD partly because it's complete (which is always a strong point for me) and partly because it's the first one I heard, so it gets points for that, even if Sarah Jessica PArker is at best an adequate singer.
It;s not a horrendous CD, but she's no Carol Burnett.
If you live in NYC - get to the Museum of Radio and Television and see the original (black and white) TV version - very funny, wonderfully directed, choreographed and performed. It is worth the price of admission to the museum just to see Jane White as the Queen - one of the funniest female villian portrayals I've ever seen.

Besides the fact she cannot begin to sing the role, SJP is miscast because she is ... well, beautiful and glamorous. This is a princess named FRED. Who swam the moat to get there. Who drinks every man in the room under the table. Its Burnett, it's Karen Morrow, Susan Johnson. LuPone could have done it.
I haven't read all these posts, but I think you're forgetting Fred is a Woebegone. Did Carol sing correctly? When I used to listen to the recording (I don't have it anymore), I thought her singing fit cause it wasn't that bad.
We did OOAM my sophomore year and I played the Minstrel. Great fun.
The Disney version was screwed up, I thought. If they kept in the more humorous parts (We Have an Opening, more of the sexual innuendos, etc) it would've been fun.

What do you expect? It's Disney!
About this Disney, this is kind of off topic. But did anyone else notice how they almost completely got rid of the Jester in the movie. The didn't talk or sing at all. And the Jester was the only person in that movie who wasn't white. Am I just reading too deep into this or is Disney being racist?

Well, I think disney is trting NOT to be racist. They got a black woman to play Ms. Farelle in Annie!
And in R & H Cinderella Cinderella was black, the Prince was Indian, The Queen was black, One of the step sissters were black and the only white ones were the king (Victor Garber) The jester (I think he was a jester. Jason Aleander) and the Step-Mother (Bernadette Peters)
???
That's blind casting if I ever saw it. Yeah, The trio song from OOAM is one of the best.

"SJP is miscast because she is ... well, beautiful and glamorous."
Am I the only person that DOESN'T think Sarah Jessica Parker is beautiful? I think she is a very unattractive woman. She has some style and fashion sense, but other than that, I don't see it at all.

Why are we snobs?
I was partly kidding.
I think that if the actress who plays Fred actually sang, it would most of the humour of it.
And so what if SJP isn't Carol. No one is. Deal with it.
(Also, for those who said that SJP is too glam, what does that say about Carol?)

1. I didn't say she was no Carol.....she just sucked
2. Carol wasn't exactly Miss Glam when she first did the show!
Thanks
I didn't mention your name as the one who called SJP glam. I saw the clip, I've heard the recording... I don't think she sucked at all.
Did you see it?
And so what if SJP isn't Carol. No one is. Deal with it.
It seems to me that everyone is dealing with it. They are dealing with it by saying they didn't like her in the role, or they did like her, etc. What does that comment mean? Do you mean accept it? If so, why should they?
I saw CB do the role, and SJP do it. When I saw CB do it, I thought the show was really great. When I saw SJP do it, I thought the show as really lame. Actually, the show IS pretty lame; but the difference is the presence and talent of it's star. CB had it, SJP didn't. So, it would seem, that YOU need to deal with it.
I've always thought SJP looks like a skinny little stick with a horse face. She does, for the most part, put herself together quite well, but I would never say she is a pretty girl.
I like her, but she isn't my definition of pretty. But, she didn't need to be.
Uh, I'm not the one complaining. I like the show, with or without Carol.
