Toni Collette should be LOVETT. It will be career defining.
That's my pick too.
Chenoweth is 25 years too old for Johanna. That idea is more insane the revival on Broadway!

I had this thought pop into my head awhile ago. They can cast someone who "looks" like they are 16 for the part of Johanna, but could be a bit older or they could cast someone who isn't 16 and apply a makeup that will make them look 16. There are some makeups and makeup techinques out there that can make you look alot younger.

Bob Crewe:"You're not hearing it right. I hear it in sky blue and you're giving me brown."
Tommy Devito:"That's cause you're paying us s***."
There are no makeups known to man that could make Chenoweth pass as a believable 16 year old on film.
I haven't been reading this thread actively, but has anyone suggested Imelda Staunton as Lovett?

My choices for Mrs. Lovett would be in order of preference:
1Imelda Staunton
2)Cyndi Lauper
3)Emma Thompson
Tobias - Freddie Highmore
The judge - Patrick Stewart
The Beadle - Bob Hoskins
Perelli - Robert Carlyle
Beggar woman - Megan Mullally
Johanna - An unknown actress
How about JLY for Anthony? Too vertically challenged?
I don't like the idea of Tobias being played by a pre-teen/teenager. One of the things I always liked about the character is his man-child personality.
Freddie Highmore may be 14, but he reads much younger in movies and he looks like he should be running through the sprinkler in a diaper. Way too young IMO.

Actually I belive that Toby played by a child would add to the psychological approach (Silent of the Lambs-like) that was discussed earlier in the thread. The thought of a child singing "Not While I'm Around" with an adult Mrs.Lovett sounds so creepy, it'd work wonders.
And as Michael Bennett said, there is no way Kristin Chenoweth (in her mid-30s) could be cast as 16 year old Johanna. Now, after hearing the clip of Hathaway singing "Kiss Me" is it bad of me if I keep insisting on her playing Johanna?
By the way, for anyone who arrived late to the thread these are the suggestions for Mrs.Lovett that have been mentioned (the believable ones, no Patti LuPone is accepted):
Toni Collette
Kate Winslet
Catherine Z. Jones
Annete Bening
Meryl Streep
Imelda Stauton
Cyndi Lauper
Emma Thompson
Tracey Ullman
Helena Boham Carter
Megan Mullaly as the Beggar Woman? Umm... NO!
I don't really want to go through 12 pages of reading, but I'll just address this anyway, and if it already has been, oh well.
Meryl has no vocal training.
Meryl [apparently] took serious singing lessons. At age 12, she studied to become an opera singer.
I don't know if this is true, but I've heard her sing and she does have a great voice...
Ryan Gosling really fits the part of Toby to me. I think he sings well enough for it too.
um..lj889..how is Kristin '25 years too old?' if Johanna is supposed to be 16, Cheno is NOT 41.
She's 38, just for the record.
'Though she could certainly sing the role, Kristin Chenoweth is FAR too old to play Johanna. Johnana is sixteen, and Kristin is in her thirties....'
in ALL of the productions I have seen of 'Sweeney' over the years, not ONCE has Johanna been played by a 16-year-old, rather by females at the time in their late 20s to 30s. For starters a 16-year old would not have the voice required to sing the role.
We are talking about a movie and not a stage production. The character is 15 or 16 in the film script - make no bones about it, they will cast someone young. In the draft I read, the character doesn't sing all that much anyway.

How about Julie Walters for Lovett? She has a pretty smashing voice and is a sensationally versatile actress. (I'm pretty sure that's the first time the sentence "sensationally versatile" has been written. Kudos to me, right?)
Imelda Staunton is a good choice, whoever originally suggested that. I'm glad lots of people are saying British names. That's a big thing for me - not that I'm adverse to other people doing it, so long as they don't have embarrassing accents.
Can Rachel Griffiths sing? Just a thought. Probably completely the wrong casting - was just watching "Very Annie Mary" and though I'm pretty much 100% sure that's not her singing, it twigged an idea in my head.
I think Cyndi Lauper is a HORRIBLE choice. But that's just my own completely honest, completely biased opinion.
How about Sam Barnett for Toby?

'Course also I'd love Ruthie Henshall to be Lovett, but that's not going to happen. Silly bat probably doesn't even know there's a film happening. Anyway, she might be awful onscreen.
Scrap that, bad idea!
Lisa vroman seemed much older than 16 in the concert version, and was a fomidable johanna.
Why not megan mullaly for lovett?
I mean, I am pulling for toni colette, but I think that she could do it as well.

"a 16-year-old would not have the voice"
Really? I can name at least a dozen girls between 14 and 18 that could sing the role brilliantly.

I agree, plus Michael Bennnett already said that Johanna does not sing much in the current screenplay anyways. I understand some people here really like Kristin Chenoweth but why don't give her the chance to star in something she's actually appropriate for?
Bernadette Peters and Ruthie Henshall are both actresses I'd love to see play Mrs.Lovett (does anyone know if Peters has ever expressed ANY interest in playing the role?) but on stage, not on the screen. Henshall's acting is very theatrical in my opinion and Peters wouln't make a good Lovett opposite Depp's Sweeney. Cyndi Lauper is probably not name enough and also I assume that apart from Streep and Collette, they're going to be looking for British actresses.
FOanatic-
Yeah! But PRODUCERS was a horrible movie. No one liked. I agree with Stiletto.
You can't say no one liked it.
You can't speak for every person that saw it.
And I said it was a bad movie...I explained why. Because it was the equivalent of taping the stage show with some slightly bigger names. There was nothing "movie" about it...that's why it failed. Also because it lacked Brook's magic touch.
"Meryl [apparently] took serious singing lessons. At age 12, she studied to become an opera singer.
I don't know if this is true, but I've heard her sing and she does have a great voice... "
Its very true. For a while she studied under some of the best opera singers in the business. Even in the production of Mother Courage, you can hear traces of strong singing technique.

I like the idea of Deep Roy (oompa loompa) as Toby.
