I was at the matinee yesterday... I cannot help but think that her decision to take little time off is based on a sense of responsibility to the production, her art, and perhaps even a kind of personal homage to her dad. She has stated how her parents were very supportive of her training and career, and this may be her way of coping with this life-changing moment.
I'd live to believe, as someone above stated, that the theater is the most healing place to be right now. Certainly this lovely show, with its emotional texture and powerful, affirmation of family and love, could provide a supportive and nurturing climate. One of the most moving aspects of 110 is the way John Cullum stands up for Lizzie's decision to spend time out of time with Starbuck. The heartbreaking irony here - that the play is about a loving dad's acceptance and support of a daughter -- is very likely not lost on the infinitely gifted Ms. McDonald.
She's a brilliant artist; may her art sustain her at this darkest time.
