re: Adam, because I have to:
Cabaret kicked ass. He's grown so much. Convincing asshole in SoR - definitely... kind of cracked me up, though. And AIDA the second time around was (with the exception of one gesutre in particular) tons of times better.
I REALLY hope that was a mistake, because if RENT closes, I will go crazy. It'll be a VERY VERY VERY sad day.

i will be so depressed if this is true, i am a MAJOR fan. it probably, sadly, is true though. i went to a sunday matinee last week and the neder was almost half full. Updated On: 11/11/04 at 10:29 PM
I'd have to say if rent closed it would be a bummer cos Larson's gone and i've never seen anything like it. And I was hoping his message would continue for at least a few more years.
I do agree the last two years of the Broadway cast has basically sucked. I saw the sixth anniversary and that was the last great performance I saw, it's now 8.5 years, and basically in the past two and a half the show has just gotten worse and worse, and btw I liked the show alot more in '97 than in '96 the OBC needed some time to really get it together and they were incredible sans Daphne in '97, the music was faster, the action and acting more lively. Honestly the show really went downhill after the initial OBC replacements left, Norbert Leo Butz, Michael McElroy, Marcy Harriel, Gwen Stewart, Kristen Lee Kelly (I know Sherie Rene Scott was the initial replacement for Maureen but she was so GOD AWFUL i block it out of my mind - and Kristen got to play Maureen alot as understudy).
As far as the OBC in the movie, I think is the best decision Revolution could have made, they can handle the show and I know they can handle it being transferred to the screen and because of the nature of the production no one should worry about it being a re-enactment of '96, its impossible, the movie version will be very different but i feel very good about it. And i too am worried about Adam's acting ability, i just hope Chris Columbus can pull it out of him.
Maybe I just dont pick up on some of the things I hear about the current cast. The three times Ive seen the show since July, I have been impressed beyond words.
Im curious though, if we could get rid of the stunt casting, get rid of all the people everyone else seems to dislike, what do you want the producers do? Wipe the slate clean and get an entirely new batch of people to do the show?
YES! Stop being bogged down by the expectation that they need to continue to put C-list celebrities in the role - hell, stop with the fallacy that stunt casting even works! Just start all over again. Maybe don't close the show entirely - just start auditioning new people, close for a few weeks, and start from a clean slate! That's all I'm asking.

A. This article was posted and then disappeared.
B. Even if it was still up, it is talking about if the Rent movie doesn't succeed. The Rent movie hasn't even been officially CAST yet, let alone given the opportunity to succeed.
C. Rent's had a pretty strong eight and half years, and will make it to ten regardless of the success of the Rent movie.
D. No show deserves to close.
E. The amount of people who judge an entire Broadway production on the one time THEY saw it amazes me.
NO show deserves to close? Really?

Obviously shows have to close. I just don't understand when I see people encouraging the closing of any show, no matter what the state. It's an opinion though. Something I personally don't like. And specifically with Rent, so long as it keeps selling, and it keeps touching people, it should remain open, no matter what the long-timers think of the state of the cast. But my opinion is hardly limited to Rent.

As jmaclover said, most people will only see a show once. And if the only impression they are getting of a potentially wonderful show is that it is just a load of crap, those behind the production should be concerned about that.

As others have said, the movie hasn't even been CAST yet, yet alone filmed, yet alone edited, yet alone released. I have a hard time believing the producers are legitimately hinging the short term OR long term box office of the Broadway show on the eventual effect the movie, which hasn't been made yet, may or may not have.
I kinda hope that RENT does close right after its 10th anniversary, because then it can have a teensy little break before they have a revival of it in another 10 years, which then means a new cast recording that a whole new generation can have to realize the cultural impact RENT had on our generation.
"Of course, one of them really can't act, so I'm worried about that peformance, lol."
Someone completely different came to mind with that quote, although I do undestand it was directed at Adam.

Nevermind, it is not important just someone else came to mind..that's all

i'm excited that the show is finally going to be filmed.
i doubt that the producers of the show have made any decisions in regards to the current state of the show based on a film that hasn't even been made or released yet.
i find it odd that playbill.com had "deleted" that article, that is assuming there was an article to begin with, they usually don't delete their articles so soon which leads me to believe it didn't exist in the first place.
