Parker Posey withdraws from THIS

Parker Posey has withdrawn from THIS at Playwrights Horizons, because she has Lyme Disease.

Best excuse since Mercury Poisoning.

That said, her being the one reason I'd resubscribe to PH this season, I'm glad I didn't resubscribe.

I'm no expert on lyme disease, but don't you just take antibiotics for it?

Whatever happened to the "creative differences" excuse?

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

While Lyme Disease can be relatively serious, it would rarely be so serious that an actress would withdraw in August from a production that doesn't begin performances until November (meaning that rehearsals wouldn't start until October). This undoubtedly has more to do with creative differences than actual illness.

No matter what the reason, at least she has the decency to leave the production early rather than just disappear and leave them scrambling to find somebody on a couple days' notice.

Why must there be some controversy? Lyme Disease is serious.

If she has had Lyme Disease for awhile that has gone untreated because she wasn't aware that she was infected it would take more than just a simple round of antibiotics to kick it. It's a very aggressive autoimmune disease that requires aggressive treatment. A simple round of antibiotics is only effective if caught very early. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. It is not to be take lightly.

Comparing this to the Piven debacle is utterly absurd. Hope she's okay.

It's a very aggressive autoimmune disease that requires aggressive treatment.

to clarify, Lyme disease is not autoimmune at all, but infectious. the agent in the US is borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochete, which is usually transmitted via the ixodes species of ticks.

the spirochete is readily killed by antibiotics. the symptoms, depending on what those are, can take some time to go away.

I agree about the lyme disease. If caught early enough, it might not be so bad. But, if not, it can be. A kid in my class one year got it, and he was out of school for months.

I agree, the connection to the Piven insanity is uncalled for. Lyme disease is quite serious, a good friend of mine still has one side of her face paralyzed from the nerve damage as a result of lyme disease. Give Posey a little credit. Not everything is fodder for scandal.

Exactly. And we're talking about a real professional here, not someone who has a history of pulling stunts.

I actually do applaud her for taking the time off to take care of her health, and I do think it's good that she didn't wait until the last minute to make this decision.

A bit OT, but when I read the synopsis of "This" I thought this to myself immediately..."Why is this chick playing the same character in every other project?"

This is the synopsis from Playbill: "In This, Jane is not okay. She's a promising poet without a muse, a single mother without lessons to pass along. Her dating life's a shambles, and her helpful friends are only helping make things more complicated. This bright, witty, un-romantic comedy captures the uncertain steps of a circle of friends backing their way into middle age."

With scant exception, this sounds much like the same protagonist Posey played in the intriguing but forgettable indie film "Broken English," which itself was only a stone's throw away from "The Oh In Ohio"...a frustrated thirtysomething young woman unsatisfied with her romantic life.

It irritates me. I would like to see some originality. That said, I like Posey enough to have given the play a chance. Let's hope she's back to health soon.

Posey is a brilliant, committed stage actress. Her award winning performance in the revival of HURLYBURLY a few years ago was divine.

Lyme Disease has the potential to be VERY SERIOUS. I hope she gets well soon and safely, and returns to the New York stage again to share her talents with us.
