to see this season. This incredible, timely, excellent, thought-provoking show is the most intelligent thing on Broadway in decades.

While I wouldn't say it's the only show to see this season, I would agree that it's the most intelligent musical currently playing on Broadway.
And it really is excellent.
I'll happily shill Stew.
^^^ I second that.
The Best New Musical I have seen so far this season.
My Order:
1. Passing Strange
2. Xanadu
3. Young Frankenstein
4. The Little Mermaid

Wow, I have absolutely no interest in seeing this. I may have to reconsider in light of the comments on this board.

They have a website. I think it's http://www.Passingstrangeonbroadway.com?
However, I would say that much of the show's interesting qualities cannot be described or felt without the full, live experience.

This show is one of the most intelligent, inspiring musicals I've seen in years. I really, REALLY, hope more people come to see this amazing show, and I'm sure that if it runs through the winter, and through til June even, it will probably get some Tony nominations, and maybe even win some too.

Really??? Sunday in the Park With George? A Chorus Line?

Trace didn't like the show.
Frenzy, easily, it's on par with Sunday. Same theme - making art.

Wow, a lot of controversy about this show on All That Chat...
This one's going to divide a lot of people. As I've mentioned before, I really flipped for it.

I liked the show a lot, and will likely see it at least one more time. But on par with Sunday? Come on now. And just because they both share a similar theme?

Yankee, loving and being a fan of a show is not being a shill.
I agree that it's the most intelligent show I've seen in ages. I also agree that it's on par or better than Sunday... and think if the Pulitzer Prize committee wanted to get a little edgy, this show is MORE than worthy. It certainly speaks to the current American experience more than, say, August: Osage County. A truly thought-provoking, moving, original night in the theater. One I cannot get out of my mind.
and let it be known that I belong to The I love PASSING STRANGE group!
per the other thread..my post:
From the time that i have seen it.. I am probbably one of the most vocal person along with yankeefan here in support for this show.. Its very well written, very imaginative scenic design, rockin' score, great lyrics and very fine acting...
PLEASE GO SEE IT ..its the BEST NEW MUSICAL for me this season..(so far) We dont get this much musical anymore that's ORIGINAL & INNOVATIVE!
and I dont wanna hear anymore complains about Disneys, jukebox musicals, movies turn musicals..if you are not going to see PASSING STRANGE & IN THE HEIGHTS!
********
this is TRULY AN AMERICAN MUSICAL!! considering Broadway is always been a new FRONTIER of ideas ....

I agree with Jaystarr.
if you cry and moan about the state of musical theater today, and don't bother seeing Passing Strange with an OPEN MIND, then you have nothing to complain about.
So it's better than Cry-baby, A Catered Affair, and In The Heights?
I can't speak for Cry-baby or Catered Affair, but having seen ITH Off-Bdway, Passing Strange is leagues better. I didn't particularly care for ITH. It's score is okay, but there's really no story or substance.
I have seen Young Frankenstein, The Little Mermaid , In The Heights (off-Broadway) , Xanadu & Passing Strange. I cant speak for A Catered Affair, though I heard the 22 songs from Cry-Baby.. and I was not really impressed with the SCORE. I was pm'ed by someone yesterday that they change some of the songs... I HOPE SO.. bec. some of my Cry_baby songs are just borderline "redicilous" Songs like " I'm Infected, One Tear, You Can't Beat the System, Hop and Bop is Here to Stay... I listened to the 22 tracks demo for 5 times and the only one that's half way decent is Take That... I really HOPE they changed most of the songs, not just the lyrics but please the melody too... its like a cheap version of HAIRSPRAY.... Marc Shaiman should have wrote the score for this one.. I am sorry to say.. YES .. I am just judging it on the 22 tracks demo... but I am not really impressed with the sound... been there.. done that... PLS WE NEED SOMETHING NEW... sounds like cheap 50's tv commercial jingles and Elvis' hawaii songs... oh lord!
okay enough of my rant with Cry-Baby....
I thought Passing Strange has better book than In The Heights (off-broadway) and most of the PS songs with the exeption of 1 are way better than ITH... Well these can all change when I see IN THE HEIGHTS 2 weeks from now....
My guess is....if they dont change Cry-Baby's score & lyrics.. XANADU might sneek in for BEST NEW MUSICAL nominations......
if I have to choose between the three that I have seen...
XANADU
PASSING STRANGE
IN THE HEIGHTS
A CATERED AFFAIR (not included bec. I have not seen it)
I think Passing Strange should win the BEST NEW MUSICAL..welll its still too early to say...but that's what I think for now...

One of the worst musicals I've seen in years. Many walk-outs during intermission. The only screaming and cheering strangely came from the back row of people (who looked like people affiliated with the show) seated at the Public Theater when it was off-Broadway.

Speaking from as far outside as a man can get- I have read reviews and posts and have NO idea what this show is about or wants to be. The title and the synopsis I read gave me NO incentive to see it. It could be the greatest show since Oklahoma, but they HAVE to find a better way to sell it.
