I was shocked at how many people in the audience knew it was her last show.
The show was great- tons of energy, a couple of moments where she appeared to be having trouble keeping it together, particularly at the end when she sings the "I've got my sisters by my side..." When she sang that, she choked up, and looked directly at Marla Mindelle, Sarah Bolt, and Audrie Neenan as they walked up and took her hand. All three of them lost it at that point, too.
After the curtain call, Jerry Zaks spoke and also got choked up. He talked about watching Patina grow from a "talented newcomer" to a "Broadway star." Then he said that he had worked with a lot of performers in this business and that Patina was the "most dedicated and committed actress" he'd ever worked with (something I've heard a number of different people say about Patina). He went on to say that no performer he'd worked with loved what they did, and got as much joy from performing, as she did.
It was definitely a great way for Patina to go out, and watching her makes you realize no one will ever play the role of Delores as well as she did.
Fun fact...I was sitting next to Alan Menken.
Raven Symone was at the other end of our row, and she appeared to be scowling much of the time.

She better start cheering up if she wants to save the show from doom.

Posted: 3/19/12 at 12:03amI have a feeling that Raven coming into this show was a decision made by the producers only ---- that Menken, Zaks, and the rest of the creative team had no wish to bring in Raven (even though she may indeed save their show...or send it plummeting to its death).

It warms my heart the Jerry Zaks felt that way about her. She deserve every accolade she has and will receive. Also, I bet she riffed the living hell outta that score!

Posted: 3/19/12 at 9:25amWell Mz. Raven better be pleasant to the ears as Deloris. I am sure she will be comedic with her acting choices. Just not convinced about her vocal delivery. There are too many girls out there known in the Broadway Community that would have been amazing in this role and could save the show... Hope she does well.

I've been told by numerous people that Raven has the world's biggest ego. And Lord knows why, although it doesn't surprise me.
Her albums have ALL flopped and she hasn't found success since her Disney Channel show. In any way, shape, or form.
I wish her all the luck in the world, but she better drop the 'tude.

Posted: 3/19/12 at 3:22pmI would have started this thread myself. I wish I could have been there at the show. Patina is amazing. I hope Raven changes her attitude a little. Reminds me of when I met her "charming" co-star Anneliese Van Der Pol at Beauty and the Beast. What a B*******

So happy Patina went out on a high note!
Ugh, Anneliese Van Der Pol... let all the Broadway queens bitch out Raven now if she's going to be anything like her. (That said, Anneliese was a fantastic Belle.)
