Posted: 8/31/04 at 9:15pmI think they both sound fantastic I'm just appalled by the editing. Suddenly they just burst with "Anywhere you go"... fu*k! scared the crap outa me. bad edit. hope it's not like that in the film... yeah right...

Posted: 8/31/04 at 9:15pmAnother thing, I'm so glad it's not Sarah Brightman. I don't think I could stand that. Becasue when I think of Christine (thanks to her) of think of some bland 30 year old woman.... (yes she can sing , but she's so bland. It's like look I can, sing I'm the best person here, screw the character bit.)

Posted: 8/31/04 at 9:16pmOk, here is my opinion. Her voice is weak but in the book she isn't supposed to have the BEST VOICE in the world like a lot of people in the show try to pull it off. If she did have that great of a voice, she would not be in the chorus. Also, she is supposed to be in her teens. The staged version has her in her thirties. I think her voice should be stronger but I think it fits her part pretty well. Patrick has a GREAT voice. Now, I want to hear the PHANTOM

It's not her fault she's young--it's the studio exs' faults that they cast someone so young.
That clip made me go rewatch the trailer, and it just brought up a lot of questions. Will they make it sexual but not overly sexual? Will they give the Phantom (Erik, bloody bastard ALW never gave him his name...) a heart or just be cruel, as I've seen him be portrayed sometimes. Why does he have a plethora of masks each changing where he is disfigured.
And then there's the biggest question of all...
Where the hell is there a swordfight in any adaptation?!!?!
I have to go read the Persia part from Susan Kay's Phantom to settle my stomach now...

Posted: 8/31/04 at 9:21pmspiderdj--by THIS point in the book, she's supposed to have the best voice. Before Erik started working with her, she had the perfect voice--only it lacked heart, feeling. She sang like she was empty. She had been trained, first by her father and then by the conservatory. Erik made her voice amazing. By the time All I Ask of You comes around, she's already triumphed at the gala and everyone in Paris now knows shes the best singer.

you know something, this sounds really weak to be coming from a film (the production). And also, I wonder how she sang with Pavarotti and such with a weak voice (also the song she sings in SONGCATHER, her voice is so much stronger). Oh well. It might be better in the movie.
And Sarah, you are correct

Posted: 8/31/04 at 9:45pmThanks for the warning about the adware, Matt. I was kind of curious about the clip, but I won't bother to listen if that's what it does. Phantom isn't worth it for me.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:23pmStrangely enough I think her lower register is much stronger. She can hit the top notes but she doesn't seem to be as comfortable with them. I heard clips of her singing country stuff on a fan website of hers and it was very strong. I think she'd make a better mezzo.

Thanks spider. If there's one thing I know, it's Phantom. Every in and out, out and in...
Except how he disappears at the end. No one will tell me that. But facts, well, those I can give you without thinking.

<< I wonder how she sang with Pavarotti and such with a weak voice >>
The publicity guys saying that she sang with Pavarotti is just a way to give her more credibility. She was in the children's chorus at the Met, and unless someone knows something I don't, singing with Pavarotti means she was on the stage at the same time.
She'll probably be OK in the film, but I have a prejudice against singing that has a lot of vibratto.

Well.
Okay, I think I'm just going to sit back and wait for Gerard. I love Patrick Wilson - but I've heard him do so much better. They both sounded a little bored by the song. Hey, it might have just been the clip....maybe I just need to see it in context.
Still can't wait for the movie!

Posted: 9/1/04 at 9:26amLove Patrick, her voice is very sweet sounding and young as has been said, but maybe that's what they were going for. This is just a thought, but maybe it's a directorial choice that she sing softly at this point. The tempo is slower than the Broadway recording and I'm thinking, based on lyrics, and this point in the show, etc. maybe they wanted her to sing it softly and sweetly and not wail? I suppose we'll find out in December.

Posted: 9/1/04 at 9:49amI really like Patrick. I think he'll be amazing all around. He sounds so effortless in his singing. I don't think I'm going to be Emmy's biggest fan. I don't want to make a solid opinion b/c that was only one song... but it sounded very mediocre to me. I also think its going to be a bit creepy having her and Patrick get it on. I don't even think thats legal just yet....

Posted: 9/1/04 at 10:03amOooooooh, I really like it. I remember Patrick's voice from the tour of "Carousel" when he played Billy, and was a nobody (and I can say I knew... or "saw" him then). Rossum's voice sounds very mature, and I've read people worrying about her age.

Posted: 9/1/04 at 10:10amIt was originally stated by ALW that they were going younger for the film. And they have. She sounds very young and immature and he sounds young also. Both are singing the way they were told to for the film. That is the bottom line. I am not crazy about what I have heard. But I will wait for the film to see how it is presented.

I think the slower tempo has folks thinking they sound bored. I think the pacing will be perfect with the action in the scene. They've escaped to the roof top, Christine is rattled and Raoul is being gentle and soothing to calm her nervous. Plus it allows plenty of time to intercut to the Phantom watching all this take place. The more rapid tempo is needed on stage.
I think it will be very romantic and I am amazed at how calm and reassuring Patrick makes Raoul sound...too bad that can't be bottled and marketed! LOL!
("Raoul" is a contrast to his next role where he plays a 32 year old guy who meets young girls on the internet, gets one to meet him and takes her home... It's an indie thriller/brain teaser named "Hard Candy" which he just finished filming.)

"emmys really good! but i have to say i am disappointed with gerard. i feel like he is "escaping" the vibrato and copying off of michael."
That clip of the title song is NOT from the film -- it's from the Sarah Brightman/Steve Harley video that was done before the musical opened.
