To me, being 'fired' is if someone isn't doing their job correctly and if they aren't showing up, and they get given the boot - fair enough!
I still don't understand how Patti and Kevin being "FIRED" from Sunset Boulevard qualifies as being "fired"???
I mean I read her book and I still don't get it. She wasn't really "FIRED" through Liz Smith's column, she just found out through it that Glenn would be playing the role on Broadway but Lloyd Webber didn't go up to her and say "You're fired" like "The Apprentice"
I'm sorry to bring this old story up again, but I have to say I do not get it.

LuPone was contracted through to Broadway. Her contract was broken and she was not taken to Broadway. She was fired.
Apparently you didn't read the book carefully enough, as it's explained that she was under contract to take it to Broadway. It wasn't just a matter of them choosing someone else for Broadway. There's a reason she got such a large amount of money out of the deal and was able to build "the Andrew Lloyd Weber Memorial Pool."
From Merrian Webster
fire- to dismiss from a position
Not only was Patti dismissed from a role she was contracted to play, but the role was given to someone else. She was fired. There's no other word for it.
Aw man! From the title of this thread, I thought Patti was going to be on the next season of Celebrity Apprentice.

I don't think she was fired. I think she was LuPwned.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, MR. TRUMP? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
I always thought "You're fired" was a stupid way to get rid of someone on The Apprentice. They don't even have the job yet!
Ohh... I would absolutely watch that.

How could Patti LuPone be on Celebrity Apprentice when she's going to be starring in the HELLO, DOLLY! revival on Broadway? I ask you!
You're clearly not fully aware of her... powers.
It would be worth it for the show to have a show curtain, though.
Something like... "HELLO, DONALD!"
Hmmm...perhaps The Donald could play Horace? Oooh, and Omarosa could play Irene Molloy!

Patti wasn't fired. Neither was Julie Taymor. Ain't Broadway grand?
But when most people are fired they are not handed a huge bag of money.
Dollypop, I thought she and Doyle were fired from the DOLLY revival??
They are if they have a contract! Just ask any of the golden parachuted CEOs out there.
"But when most people are fired they are not handed a huge bag of money."
I believe she was paid for the rest of her contract. And lots of corporate people walk away with big bags of money when they are fired.
All your average "at will" worker gets when they're fired is whatever's in their 401K (if they have one). But, like others have already said CEOs will typically get some sort of settlement whether it's contractual, "hush money" to keep them from sharing company secrets, or whatever.

Whatever happened to "Creative Differences"?

CurtainPullDowner, It was Jack O'Brian. Herman wasn't crazy about his ideas for it. So, the project is 'off' again.

The project isn't "off". It centers on how to interpolate "Love Look In My Window" (one of the Merman numbers). It makes the same point as "Before the Parade Passes By"
^ Are they attempting to incorporate both Merman numbers or just the one?

I also just read Patti's memoir and... it was just a little too gossipy for me. I really enjoyed the behind the scenes looks she wrote about, but I read Arthur Laurents' (the most crotchety man alive) memoir and even though he talked about people he didn't like, he wasn't cruel and the book was highly informative.

About the Merman numbers:
I've been led to believe that the problem was about not using "Love Look In My Window", as it really states what the "Parade" number does. When Merman played Dolly, "Love Look In My Window" segued into "Before the Parade Passes By" with Dolly's speech to Ephraim tossed in between them. I believe that's what Jerry Herman would like to happen again this time around.
I repeat, what about the other one, "World, Take Me Back"? Is that projected to join the show as well or not?
I hope so . I really like "World, Take Me back" and think Patti be great singing it.
