So I saw Patti in Sydney the other night. And It almost sounded like she was using her vibrato to keep in tune.
She'd hold on note, go slightly out a little while later then come in with vibrato and everything was fine. Has anyone noticed this before? Is this a common practice or am I going crazy :P?
Maybe she had an off night. But still. I found this interesting.

I just see it as her style of singing. And I don't care what "zOMFG She has a terrible technique! She's going to ruin her voice in the future" people have to say or you, Tazbar.
haha. Yes I've noticed it before, Patti goes out of tune often, cuz she abuses her voice kinda. I do agree that when she sings in staight tone often she goes under the pitch and then we she goes to vibrato it's fixed.. I think that's because vibrato (in most cases) is healthy and natural, so when she switches to that, she's not pressing down on her voice which can drag it. I'm not sure whether or not she's conscious of it though.. Probably not. haha
I know people say she has terrible technique. I have a feeling if she did she would not have been able to do all but three performances of Gypsy. Her voice would have been shot by the end. I don't think she has perfect technique but it works for her.
She has one of the best vocal coaches out there. I think she knows what she's doing.
Out of pure curiosity, who is her vocal coach?
she used to have terrible vocal technique, which is why getting through Evita was such a struggle for her. now she has a great technique, and I think she sounds better now than she did thirty years ago.
Im sure she has been in tune once or twice before
"I think what happened to me was I had a vocal chord operation, which forced me into rehabilitation with the singing teacher in New York City, who finally, after all these years, drummed a technique into my head. I would fall back on everything I knew how to do to get the notes, and, of course, I was hurting myself. What [Joan Lader] has done is given me a technique so that I can maintain my voice."

As a voice teacher I think she has a good technique. She does seem to suffer from some jaw wabble but from my experience that comes with the territory of aging.
For what its worth... Joan Lader is also Madonna's vocal teacher. She's responsible for having 'taught' Madonna how to sing for Alan Parker's 1996 film adaptation of EVITA and she continues to use her today. Also, LuPone and Madonna would sometimes have back-to-back sessions on the same day. LuPone is on the record as giving Madonna props for taking on the role: "... two Italian chicks backing each other up".

I'm sure Patti muttered an insult under her breath while walking out.

Like:
"Screw the movie version!
I will never accept it,
And I will never do a Lloyd Webber show again!
As for you Madonna,
Now that you've had that kid,
Wait 'til you start to breastfeed,
And your pert little titties start sagging!"
Patti openly admits that she refuses to watch the movie. She has said it's not the same show because they drastically lowered the keys for Madonna.
But "the italian girls stick together" story is pretty well known.
Does Joan work with anyone else other than Madonna and LuPone?

she also generally doesn't watch shows she's done after leaving them.
I think Joan Lader worked with Laura Bell Bundy, if I'm remembering correctly. I also think I "met" her once, but it was a semi weird situation, so I'm not positive.

I think Lader works with Titus Burgess (sp), too.
She also worked with Bailey Hanks right after she won the reality show.
Lader is also Betty Buckley's vocal coach.

I've read that 3 times and I can't even determine if it's English, or a transliteration of some other language.
