Patti Lupone haters?

Wildcard - I'm one of the Patti fanatics who will admit that she's not perfect, right for every role, etc... We do exist. hehe
Though she is the cure to most of my problems. The Lady With The Torch has a song for every bad relationship.

yeah on other threads i've heard alot of critism of patti in sweeney, but i saw her, and i thought it was excellent.
i like'd her potrayal of mrs. lovett much better than angela lansberry's.
yes, i do know that sondheim originally wrote the role with angela in mind.
but i still like the less silly mrs. lovett that patti shows.

"...but i still like the less silly mrs. lovett that patti shows."
Have you seen Patti in the concert version of Sweeney Todd? She acted like Mrs. Lovett was emotionally overeacted. Very nervous about things around her. I haven't watch the new show but according to the video promos, she's too serious. Mrs. Lovett is actually a mother-like character who eventually shows her evil face at the end, that's why Sondheim want Angela to do it. Patti did this also (with hilarious elements in the concert version too), but in the new show... I think it's the director's problem...

I think she adapted it for the production, she was funny at the right moments, but very scary. It would have been odd for her to do the Lovett that she did for the concert version in this context.
I love both though.

So you've seen her birth certificate, CrimsonFaerie?
I wasn't in any way trying to be nasty or suggest that she looked older. If she had taken a year or two off her age, she would hardly have been the first actress or actor to have done that. I just wondered if she was a little older because I did think that Juilliard was usually more in the nature of a graduate school and so I wondered because of the year she would have graduated from Juiliard.

Oh, indeed I have seen it. In my dreams.
Well, to the best of my knowledge, that date is correct. I didn't think you meant to imply she looked older...I just had to state that I think she looks damn good. Because she does. hehe

People enjoy her personality, as do I. Sometimes that can help onstage, like when you need a big presence in Evita. However, sometimes big attitudes and personalities just have no place onstage for certain roles and she just seems like too big a figure for her own good. Luckily she has gotten roles that appease that and she can bring it out to strengthen her performance.

I heard her on the OLC of Sunset Blvd a couple of years ago and have been a fan ever since. I like both the personality she shows off and her voice, which is quite special in color and range.
Why would someone replace her in Sunset with Glenn Close is beyond me...

I've never seen her onstage, so maybe that makes my opinion completely invalid to some people. If it does, just stop reading. I don't want to deal with you.
I like her in some roles and I hate her in others. I hate the tempo she takes "Worst Pies in London" at off the top of my head. I just don't like her as Mrs. Lovett, both in the concert version and in the clips I've seen of the revival. It's just not the role for her, in my opinion.
However, her Mama Rose is stunning.

Posted: 11/12/06 at 12:24amI love Patti. I think she's an outstanding actress and singer. I'll admit, I can be one of those "Patti is the answer to everything" people at times, but most of the time I'm not. I love Patti because she is so larger than life and has a truly stunning stage presence. She is truly a living legend.

Posted: 11/12/06 at 11:09amI sometimes like her, and sometimes hate her. Well, hate is a strong word, but her voice at times is like fingernails on a blackboard. I think she's a talented actress, but her voice can be quite ugly at times in my opinion. I do kinda appreciate her "in your face tell it like it is" personality though.

I love Patti and her straight-forward personality. I thought she was brilliant in Sweeney, and I would've sold a kidney to see her at Ravinia.
I can't wait to see her in concert on Saturday- it'll be magnificent.

I hate the tempo she takes "Worst Pies in London" at off the top of my head.
Well, that's not a Patti problem, that's a Doyle problem.
Your other points are valid though. Though I will agree that seeing her live is something extraordinary.
