Patti Lupone on 'Piano Lesson' : 'They're going to win ALL the awards'

Today on 'THE VIEW' , host Sunny Hostin said she went to see THE PIANO LESSON last night, and called it 'the best dramatic play I have ever seen on Broadway', noting she has been going to see just about every show on Broadway for a long, long, time.

She said Patti Lupone was sitting right behind her - told her 'They're going to win ALL the awards'.

From Patti's mouth to God's ears.

I could just as easily hear Patti saying this in a sarcastic tone.

It’s got some hot and potentially hot competition this year, so I wouldn’t be so sure of any actual nominations, let alone awards.

Regardless, Best Actor has the potential to be an embarrassment of riches. Wendell Pierce, John David Washington, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sean Hayes, Jefferson Mays, Ain't No Mo, the boys from Topdog and The Collaboration...plus more to be announced. The category could shake out any number of ways.

Not really. Lupone apparently believes this production has set the bar for this theater season, and all other shows which will open later have a tough act to follow (pun intended).

I know actors / critics have called out a movie or a performance as the 'Oscar winner' long before other movies have opened - and they've been right. No different on Broadway.

I'm sure most of us have said something similar to someone nearby in the theatre at one time or another. (I certainly have.) Sometimes we are right and sometimes we are wrong. And it is well to remember that Patti has no inside track on these things because she is a well-known actor. The subjective opinions of actors are not any different than anyone else's, especially when it is based, as it is here, on a very incomplete sample.

As soon as I saw this thread has been bumped, I assumed it would be some cheeky comment about the Equity card, but I thought to myself “how the hell are they going to manage to draw a connection between the two?”

Well, it was a bit of a stretch, but I guess you managed.

Or, she walks over to the table where the cast is playing cards, grabs her Equity Card, and with a flourish throws it down and says:

"Not so fast! This has always brought me luck."

And exits.
