re: Performances for TONYS

'Rose's Turn' seems like the obvious way to showcase Ms. LuPone and "Gypsy." It's the traditional number for "Gypsy" productions to do at the Tonys, but I don't know if it's the best option when you think about it. Especially for THIS production. Ms. LuPone's 'Rose's Turn' is constantly talked about as the main attraction or featured event for the production, so is it best to just give it away on the Tonys broadcast? Maybe it is. Maybe it will make people run to get tickets, but I also see something to saving that climax for people actually seeing "Gypsy". I don't know...just thinking out loud.

re: Performances for TONYS

This is not necessarily true. You may be seeing performances from some of the non-nominated musicals this year. CBS wants a more entertaining broadcast.

^^^ yup. most likely> I am sure CBS is dying to have YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN & THE LITTLE MERMAID on the TONYS to boost the sagging ratings.

Of course... GREASE will be nominated by default!

>It's the traditional number for "Gypsy" productions to do at the Tonys<

I would question this. Lansbury did "Everything's Coming Up Roses" in 1975 (in a tribute to the Winter Garden Theatre, not as necessarily her performing it as Rose). Daly didn't perform in 1990. Bernadette did "Rose's Turn". Just by one performance, "Rose's Turn" can hardly be called the "traditional number" for Gypsy productions.

musicalmaster703, I am WELL AWARE that "Amsterdam" is indeed a song in the show, but the song I believe you're *thinking* of is "Keys" -- "Hey, Mr. L.A., I know a place where you can stay, etc." which leads into the "Yeah, it's alright!" chorus/screaming/rock-out-fest us PS fanatics adore! Just pointing it out there, friend. No harm done.

Jay, I think XANADU *should* do a medley, but definitely end with XANADU. I say "I'm Alive" into "Evil Woman" (hoping Mary and Jackie get nominated 'cause yeah, they deserve it!) into "Don't Walk Away" (possibly? to showcase Cheyenne) and end with the title song? Just my opinion for now...

re: Performances for TONYS

I'm thinking the producers of GYPSY would like "Everything's Coming Up Roses". One one hand, the advertising is clearly geared toward "Roses Turn". On the other, there is something to be said for not giving it away, but making people buy tickets.

And frankly, after seeing LuPone's manic and devastating "Rose's Turn", I'm not sure it would work well out of context.

And the suggestion of "Sunday" for SUNDAY is a wonderful one! I didn't know they did it in '84, but it's a great choice.

I think that In The Heights would do In The Heights because that is a song that shows the style of music used in the show. And it is one that uses all the leads and the ensemble.

re: Performances for TONYS

Sorry, Smaxie, but with 4 musicals and 4 revivals I strongly doubt that they would present a full musical number from a production not nominated for Best Musical.

That was the buzz last year, but let's be realistic, as much as we'd like everyone to perform, I strongly doubt we would get anything but a medley of other musicals or a tribute of some sort.

Blaxx, I didn't just make that up off the top of my head. That rumor has been kicking around, and I would imagine CBS would have more awards relegated to off-camera in order to make time for more entertainment segments.

I hate MEDLEYS! re: Performances for TONYS

The only ones that work for me are these two: Spring Awakening & Jersey Boys.

I agree Jay, medleys typically drive me nuts, but I think it could work for In The Heights. I see it transitioning from number to number really well

re: Performances for TONYS

I enjoyed the SA Tony Award performance more than I did the entire show.

I want PS to do an Amsterdam/Keys Medley. It's not gonna be hard to transition from Amsterdam to Keys. It will be amazing.

ITH can do En Washington Heights, and that should be sufficient and awesome.

re: Performances for TONYS

I have heard that there are certain people on these threads that are getting paid to post negative comments about shows. Seems these people post their opinions about a given show on every thread they can even if there is no relevance. Certainly destroys the validity of certain comments. Makes one wonder!

West- I seem to believe a lot of this idea stems from the fact that people think to themselves "How could so-and-so like this show when I absolutely hated it? They must be getting paid!!!" In all honesty, do you think a show's producer is going to spend money trying to convince the minute amount of people who actually read these boards? It just seems so unlikely to me. Again, you can't be sure, but I just don't think it seems logical.

Back on topic, I would be thrilled to see Patti's Rose's Turn again (I saw her perform it twice back at Ravinia.) I'll be happy with anything from Sunday and would love to see Nothing Like a Dame. Does anyone know what the exact date is that shows no longer become eligible for this year's Tonys and must wait until next year? Just curious. Thanks.

If you're talking about jay, he's not "certain people" he's one the board's most liked and respected members, and he's not off in his perception about Cry Baby. Even if the show was to get a nomination it has strong odds against it.

If you want to make anyone believe that someone has influenced or even paid to trash a musical theater masterpiece, you're just kidding yourself.

It's also rather long (over 7 minutes). That's why I think they should do a medley including this and "96,000" (aside from the fact that 96,000 just needs to be seen re: Performances for TONYS ).

re: Performances for TONYS

Not all these shows will get nominated, but this is what I think they should preform anyway:

A Catered Affair: One White Dress/Vision.
Grease: You're the One that I Want
Gypsy: Together Wherever We Go, but they will do Roses Turn.
In The Heights: Medley
Passing Strange: Amsterdam, or Keys.
South Pacific: Medley, just makes the most sense.
Sunday in the Park With George: We Do Not Belong Together
The Little Mermaid: Under the Sea, even though it sucks.
Young Frankenstein: Puttin' on the Ritz
Xanadu: Xanadu, but they will most likely end up doing a Medley.
