I'm going to be in New York this weekend for a very short time period and only have time to see two shows... I've already decided on seeing Once, and I'm torn between whether I should see Peter and the Starcatcher or Newsies.
Any tips from anyone who has seen either/both??
Peter and the Starcatcher is unique, lovely and just an enchanting night in the theatre.
Newsies was... a bore.
PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, by far.
PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. Don't miss this.
Plus, NEWSIES is going back out on the road so you can catch the tour. Even if PETER AND THE STARCATCHER ends up being a highly-produced regional show (which I think it will), you won't get Christian Borle's performance which is going to be a Tony-winning one.

Definitely PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. It is a giddy delight, start to finish--clever, funny, whimsical and everything else one goes to the theater to experience. Christian Borle's manic Black Stache is not to be missed. While I liked NEWSIES, I think it's been overly hyped; same with its star Jeremy Jordan. He's OK, but nothing more.

Not to sound like a broken record. But Peter and the Starcatcher is the clear choice.
It is so inventive and refreshingly creative. It will perfectly compliment your choice to see Once and you won't regret it.
As the Capn has already said, Christian Borle should and will win a Tony for his performance as Black Stache.

Just seen a clip this might get a tony for best play it looks funny well written piece of theatre.
Peter
Saw PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Sunday night and was pretty much blown away by the theatricality of the piece. Peter never wants to grown up, he wants to be a boy his entire life, and that's a theme that resonates with everyone. This troupe of actors is so wonderful telling this story. Everyone is terrific. One of the brightest additions to the season.
Saw NEWSIES a few weeks back and was disappointed. Why do so many of the Disney shows always feel so empty, so devoid of heart? Unlike ANNIE, the show it tries to emulate, NEWSIES has few memorable characters and songs that are forgotten once you leave the theatre. Sure all those singing dancing chorus boys are fun, the choreography is pretty terrific, although what it has to do with news boys is beyond me, but the whole thing left me numb. They sure were selling lots of posters and t-shirts though...
Yea, I'd have to agree with everyone and say Peter and the Starcatcher. As much as I love Newsies, I think anyone who has the opportunity to see more than one show during their trip should make room for at least one straight play.
I seem to be in the minority here but I loved Newsies. The choreography was fun & had tons of energy. Jeremy Jordan was fantastic on the night I saw him. The other show I saw when I was in town was Once, which was spectacular. That being said, when I get back to the city, Peter & the Starcatcher is tops on my list to see. I love Celia Kenan-Bolger & Christian Borle so I really want to see it.

Peter and Newsies are my two favorite shows of the spring, so choosing between them is impossible for me, although Peter is also probably one of my favorite shows ever. The buzz around it(on this board, at least) has been a bit quiet, so I'm really happy to hear from people who are loving it. Enjoy whichever show you end up choosing, alexxmichele!
I didn't love Newsies or Peter and the Starcatcher but I had a better time at
Newsies
If Peter is unavailable see GHOST instead of Newsies. Newsies was boring and empty, like others have said.
