I'll throw in a good word for Ms LuPone here as well - she was entering the Goodman Theater from the box office door (I don't know why) the day I was picking up my tickets to see War Paint last summer and I saw her, nearly lost it but kept a somewhat calm appearance (my mouth was literally gaping so maybe not quite as calm), she smiled at me and said "I really hope you have fun today!" laughed really graciously as she walked off.
I do not believe any story about her being rude to her fans unprovoked.

I didn't say anything to her but the person next to her did. She made a gesture like the was brushing them away with her hand and kept talking. She also left before the show was over.

I was seeing Angels in America in London yesterday and the person (from the States) sitting next to me checked her phone during the performance, and another person who I believe is also from the States didn't turn off his cellphone and it rang multiple times including during Prior's final monologue. In other shows I saw, the audience were so so much better behaved than the raucous Broadway crowds.

No one is saying she shouldn't have done it, I'm glad she did SOMETHING, but screaming about it doesn't help anyone. It's like parents screaming at their kids about something they did wrong. It's psychology, It doesn't work. The way Glenn, Laura, and a few others have done it was tactful and still made a point. They used more of a guilt trip which usually works. Patti is just a self serving and entitled snot who has let her high career status go to her head over the years. Almost every "I met Patti" story I've heard is like this, she's rude, ungracious, and exemplifies the negative diva stereotype that gives this world one of it's many bad reps.
"
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Good for her !! I loved the line "do you want a show or a photo shoot?" and don't care how long it has been used.

"But seriously....WHY IS THIS SUCH AN EPIDEMIC?? It's no secret phones have no place being out during the show, so why does this continue to happen?? And no, ignorance of first time theater goers is not an excuse anymore, because as I said...it's NO secret."
I will blame it partly on social media like FB. I am sure this person has posted these pictures on her FB page. Also, people don't get stopped taking pictures at concerts unless you have a professional looking camera so they probably think it is still ok for some odd reason to do this despite the announcements before the show.
