How much of a chance does the Light in the Piazza tour have of touring with Victoria Clark?
Any thoughts?

Sure bonafide stars tour, or at least they used to... Carol Channing toured the country with Dolly for years, as did Angela Lansbury with Gypsy, Mame, Sweeney. The issue is not her "star" status (which seems a bit dubious to me anyway - outside of the theatre world who really knows who Victoria Clark is?) but practicality. Her son is an issue and also, she has been attached to this piece for over two years now. If she does tour with it she will win my trouper of the decade award.
A more likely choice would be someone like Judy Kaye who was mentioned in another thread. She would be a fine choice to lead the road company IMO.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 3:42pmShe just changed her performance schedule to six shows a week so she could spend more time with her son. There's no way she would go on tour.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 3:44pmCherry Jones is a Broadway star and it looks like she's touring with Doubt. I guess occasionally, they still do it. I am in agreement that since Clark has a young son, she'd probably rather stay home with him during this very formative time in his life (and they are obviously so close, considering her comments about him when she won the Tony.) I like the idea of Kaye playing the role - she is an amazing performer, though no one will every take the place of my memory of Clark - she was magnificent.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 6:41pmI'd assume that the role is Patti Cohenour's if Clark passes, assuming, of course, that she wants the role.

I second timote. I think Cohenour is the ideal Margaret for the road company. She has established credits (the original Christine POTO alternate and replacement for Brightman,) is from the Broadway company, and has performed the role with good reviews. Don't count on Clark.. like people said, she has an established family life in NYC that she wouldn't be able to leave behind.
Someone mentioned Cherry Jones in the "Doubt" tour... Isn't she only doing the first six months? I took it as her trying to get good publicity and such opening the show, not her being in the tour for the long haul.

Posted: 3/1/06 at 10:59pmI am pretty sure that she would tour. They will pay her very good money to go on tour as the headliner. I would be surprised if she DOESN'T end up headlining the tour.

Maureen McGovern is a completely different case from Vicki: Vicki's made it pretty clear with her new six show week schedule that any decision she makes is with her son's best interests at heart, and it might not be good for him to have his mother away for however long her contract would last...or for him to move around with her if she takes him along. Even if they do offer her a huge amount of money and the opportunity to headline, her son's going to keep her in NYC.
She's also been playing the role for three years. I think after the show closes, she'll want a rest.

I think Jones signing on to do six months of the tour is a "long haul" in its own right. I doubt it's for publicity sake. She brought "The Heiress" to Los Angeles after it closed in NY, so I'm not surprised (as some folk are) that she's touring "Doubt".
By the way, I just heard that LA is indeed getting "Doubt" with Cherry Jones. Don't know the exact date, but it's been signed.

Maureen McGovern was a pop singer, who thus, is used to touring and may even enjoy it. Most NYC actors do not like touring.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 5:05pmShe's not going to tour. Plain and simple. If she were still doing all 8 shows a week, that might be different.

Does Piazza have a closing date? Won't they just keep extending it again?
It's very possible I missed the announcement, which is why I am asking...

Posted: 3/3/06 at 6:47pmAs of right now, it closes on July 2nd. That could change.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 8:52pmI know this is a bit off topic, but is there a good chance I'll see her on a Saturday afternoon. I loved her when I first saw it and I know she took the first days of the week off to be with her son, but not Saturday, correct?

According to her site she is only taking off Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Saturdays are still on...

I've been reading about the show being unable to extend further than July 2 and was honestly curious as to the reasons why. I know LCT has been moving the scheduled productions into other empty Broadway houses. Is there something impending next fall that has been designed specifically for the Beaumont stage? Or does it have something to do with the cost? I know its doing decent business, and will probably pick up with the spring. Just curious as to what's up.
(I am eternally grateful we got the extra 12 1/2 months of Piazza in NY, as it has been my show of choice for the past 11 months).
Thanks for your input,
~Kev

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:40pmDon't the shows that play in the Beaumont get produced for a lot cheaper than they would in a regular house? Maybe they don't want to keep mounting productions in other houses when it's cheaper to do it there.
