The latest food in the theater drives me nuts. All the theaters in Boston now allow food/drink into the theater, I want to ring the neck of the fools that are carrying glasses of wine down to their seats.
As for having good theater ettiquete, I like to think I do. I very rarely talk during the show, and flat out refuse to eat/drink (well, if I'm going to cough, I will get a bottle of water to stop myself). I will admit, though, that my attire isn't exactly the best theater-going fashion (usually I end up wearing jeans and a collared shirt).

"It's almost as obnoxious as having people walk up and down the aisles of the Hilton yelling "Programs!" "Chiity cars and light up necklaces!" "
They are doing the exact same thing at Jersey Boys now too.

Posted: 6/10/06 at 9:20amI'd like to get back to dress code on this. I mean, when I went to NYC with my school in February and we saw DRS I had people who were staying in my room staring at me like I was crazy for wearing a skirt. They all had on jeans! I was like, what, do you have no respect for the theater anymore? I would NEVER go to a Broadway production in jeans! Hell, I would never go into a high school production of a show in jeans. But I guess it's just the current thing...

Posted: 6/10/06 at 9:33amthat is awful...seriously popcorn??!?! I mean it shouldn't suprise me because it's Hairspray but my thinking is that if you are going to keep lowering the class-y-ness of going to the theater than lower the prices. If I am going to pay that much money for a show than I don't want to be sitting by a bunch of people munching on popcorn! Seriously this is so depressing...does this stuff happen off broadway??

Posted: 6/10/06 at 9:45amiHeartMyGeek - you have been brought up better than your friends I'd say. Your parents have given you superior standards. I'd say your friends wear jeans to the movies (OK) and think this is just the same. I imagine that they probably don't go to the theatre much at home either. Now if you are a male they probably had fairly good reason to stare at you for wearing a skirt.

well, timote, in Boston they also don't start the shows directly on the hour as someone invented some 13 minute rule before starting (so dumb) and they also don't ever come back to their seats when intermission is over until halfway through the first scene. Boston theatre SUCKS!
and as for iHeartMyGeek, the ushers in DRS are GHETTO as hell. i'm surprised THEY didn't slap you for wearing a skirt

(wow OLD before your age)
sorry, I disagree....get out of your paradigm. I've paid my dues, and I wear what I want, when I want if it's jeans to a show, so be it!....Hell, if I pay a fortune for a ticket I should be able to go naked.........and all of the little fashion sandinistas who think they know best for "the theatuh" can just go berate themselves for acting like little gossipy grandmothers.
You are there to see a show YOU paid for........what you, or I wear has NOTHING to do with your experience......as if it does, you have MUCH larger issues.......

Posted: 6/10/06 at 10:38amYes, but if you dress a little better it adds to the whole sense of occasion, don't you think? And another bad habit (or things I hate), audience members reading the newspaper prior to the performance.

personally, i would not wear a "dressy" outfit for a high school theatre production, especially if i am going to be sitting a fold up chair in a cafe-torium that smells like fried food. If i were going to "my" theatre (the theatre i do most of my "work" or shows) i would wear jeans and a nice polo. (this theatre is a professional theatre). And if i were to go see something in say boston or NYC i would wear khakis and button shirt ect.
So my dress varies on where im going, also what im going to see, if i go to see Rocky im not going to wear a a very dressy kindof thing ect..
Food in the theatre bothers me so much! im okay with water, but only to be consumed quietly and unseen. Keep the candy in the lobby. And getting up during a shw also bothers me.
i like to think i have good etiquitte (sp?) in the theatre...but correct me if im wrong.

"Last Sunday at Hairspray, was a woman two people away who insisted on eating candy and making noise with her wrapper as she did. She was not young, probably mid to late 60's and should know better."
The bridge and tunnel crowd have no age limits
Times certainly have changed. I can remember the first time I ever saw a man attend a theatre performance without a coat and tie. It was the original production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I was astounded. Now, I can't recall the last time I wore a coat and tie to the theatre. Somehow people managed to run next door or across the street if they needed a drink during intermission...that ended in the early 60s. Beatlemania was the first time I ever saw drinks allowed at the seats.

"...staring at me like I was crazy for wearing a skirt.".
I got the same looks the time I wore my skirt to the theatre so I know what you mean.

Posted: 6/10/06 at 11:15amoccasion? It's an entertainment that I've paid a lot of money for...and I'm going to be comfortable.......Am I going to wear jeans with holes in them? No...a t-shirt? no.......but I am also not going to dress-up and sit like a bored British Lord because I am uncomfortable.......it's that simple. Maybe it's desert living, but I wear a tie maybe twice a year for work......used to be three times (today used to be one of those times as I am going to retirement lunch in LA for some of my customers)...but now I wear nice tan slacks, and a Hawaiian shirt.......comfort is ket

I agree; I wear what I want to when I go to the theater. Although, I do wish people would use common sense and try not to look completely sloppy and gross when they go to the theatre. I mean, I'll wear jeans sometimes, but I always pick a really nice pair.
And the eating in theaters.... not a good trend. If I hear popcorn munching.... I don't think I can be held accountable for my actions.

Posted: 6/10/06 at 12:14pmAs yummy as the popcorn is at Hairspray, I dont understand why anyone would buy it. Eating that stuff is inevitably the loudest to the one eating it. I cant hear a thing if Im chewing something crunchy, Id miss half the show.

Posted: 6/10/06 at 1:36pmThere is no way I will ever attend a Broadway theater that serves popcorn. People munching loudly on popcorn at the movie theater drives me insane (seriously, why can't people chew with their mouths closed?!). If I had to pay $110 for a show an listen to that, I would seriously lose it! LOL

You can't blame a producer for wanting to make a buck (the profit margin on most concessions, especially popcorn is obscene!), but here's a fun idea:
Produce GOOD theater! A really good show stands a great chance of making back it's investment and a profit than most of the dreck currently one or soon to be on Broadway!

Posted: 6/10/06 at 2:45pmThe theater isn't a black-tie event anymore. I see at least one show a week, maybe two, if I'm having a good week. There's no way I'd dress up, unless it's an Opening Night. For me, it isn't special going to see shows.

I think it's fine to wear jeans as long as you look nice. If I wear jeans I make sure I have a nice top and shoes because sometimes people like to wear really nice dresses and stuff so I don't want to look like I am from the street. At evening shows I think it's nice to wear dress pants or whatever but hey, as long as you look nice. But I would never wear a basic t-shirt, unless it was a decorated tee.
As far as food goes, I always make sure if its in wrapper, that I open it up and get it ready so that it doesn't make too much noise. It's nice to have something to snack on, but people forget that everyone else can hear them...
Oh well...what can you do?

I hardly EVER eat in the theatre. Only if I'm SUPER SUPER hungry. And that RARELY happens. I'm the person who eats Sour Patch Kids, puts her feet up on the back of the seats, plays with the lights, and gossips in the movie theatre, so my information here isn't too valuable.
I know the last time I went to NYC, I saw Wicked and RENT. I wore jeans to both shows, but I only wore jeans to Wicked because I wore my Defy Gravity shirt and my green belt I bought JUST FOR that shirt. My shoes matched, too. (my special green and black Shox that are SO much more comfortable than the sherpa boots my mom made me bring...in OCTOBER)
For RENT, I wore a sweater with a hood, jeans, and the same shoes I wore to Wicked.
To see the Hairspray tour in January, I wore jeans and a nice sweater/sleeveless shirt combo with a scarf belt.
(Note: I add detail in the wrong places.)
Long story short, if I go to the theatre, I TRY to be comfortable, but also look nice. Even for the Regional/Non-Eq. place I work at AND attend regularly, I usually go for a dressy-casual vibe, because it's outdoors. (I wear skirts there all the time)
