"Oh stop whining, its popcorn. Honestly. BIG deal, im pretty sure there are bigger issues in the world thatn popcorn at Hairspray.".
Of course there are. They are on the off topic board so go there if you want to talk about that stuff.
This is about theatre and popcorn or other food munching does not belong inside a Broadway house. Period. If you want to munch, stay home or go to a movie. Surely you can go 2 hours without stuffing your face.

I'm afraid things like this may become a trend. I just got back from a matinee at The Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY. During the pre-show announcements, the managing director announce that they had a contract with a new caterer for the pre-show meals and intermission snacks in the outdoor restaurant adjacent to the theatre. She also announced that it was now okay to bring food into the theatre. As the intermission ended, several people returned to their seats with plates mounded with wraps, salads, etc. and proceded to pass them around to the others in their group during the performance. Needless to say, it was very distracting.

As a graduate of Ithaca College, it makes me very sad to hear that the Hangar is doing this.

If you're an IC grad then you'll be intersted to know that the current show at The Hangar is Sammy and Me, a nearly one-man show written and performed by an IC alum, Eric Jordan Young, Class of '93. Oops, I guess this is off topic

Not if he walks through the audience hawking refeshments :)
I saw the show last July 2nd when MJW was back for a week and Bruce was still in. The popcorn was there then. I was really surprised. Things that other theatre goers do never shock me anymore.
I have seen both extremes in dress. Some have ratty jeans while others have on formal attire. I am not someone who can afford to see a show every weekend, so I choose to dress nicely. We usually pair the evening with a nice dinner. I think there should be a rule for it. If you can't wear it to a nice restaurant, you shouldn't wear it to the theatre.

Avenue Q at Vegas were selling Popcorn, sodas, candies, and hot dogs.
When I saw Spelling Bee back in April, some boy scout was going throw the audience throwing little bags a peanuts, popcorn and M&Ms. I thought that was extremely rude...

I got yelled at by a mother and I'm pretty sure I made an eleven year old cry over this. I was seeing Sweeney Todd's saturday evening performance and there was a family next to me. The eleven year old, her mother, and her father. The girl had walked in with a bag of lays potatoe chips and I thought I was going to cry...luckily, the father took those away from her. Then at intermission she got a water bottle. Does everyone know that thing people do when they suck on the water bottle and it crunches up and then uncrunches? Well she was doing that. Her dad told her to stop, she did, for like ten minutes, she did it again. He told her to stop then her mother told her father to stop chastising her for being a kid. She did it again. I couldn't help it anymore, I reached over and grabbed the water bottle and said "okay, stop." she looked like she was going to cry...after the show her mother told me "You have no right to discipline someone elses child like that. It's incredibly rude, and shows a lack of respect for anyone but yourself." I just told her, "You have no right to ruin a show I paid good money to see. Neglecting to teach your children etiquette is incredibly rude and shows a lack of respect for everyone, including yourself." then I left.
Sorry rambling....it's just ****in' ridiculous. And cell phone use drives me nuts. Whats so goddamned important that it can't wait two hours? If there's something truly that important in your life that you can't wait two hours, YOU SHOULDN'T BE IN A THEATRE IN THE FIRST PLACE, or anywhere you might have to wait two hours for that matter.
About the dress, the only time I really care is when people look ultra trashy. Jeans...I wore jeans to both matinees I saw, granted I wore a nice-ish top both times, put my face on, and kinda-sorta- did my hair. I wouldn't really wear jeans to an evening performance though. I don't know why. It's just respectful I guess.

You should have smacked the mother!
Wow, what a mother. Maybe you should have told the father since he at least tried to make ber stop. gee, some people...
Also, I agree with you about dressing up at night. It seems different than a mat. show.

I went to a local Phoenix production at a reputable theatre on Thursday. The Managing Director came out to make a few comments...and proceeded to mention where we could find certain people at HALF-TIME!? What is this, a sporting event?

AlexandraDecker, what you did IS incredibly rude. No matter how frustraited you are, you never have the right to discipline someone else's child. If anything, alert the House Manager.

What kind of mother takes an 11 year old to Sweeney anyway??
That right there is a big tipoff.

It's been my experience that ushers, head ushers and house managers don't give a damn about maintaining order in the audience. The patrons have to do it themselves.

Alex did you physically grab the bottle? If you did you've got cojones! It's tricky. You wish parents would behave like parents when their children act up. No one should be put in that position. If a child is out of hand, leave and don't make it hell for everyone else. (of course it depends where this is happening. A park...not a big deal. A theatre...a bit of a deal)
You all sound like little children whining over something as little as popcorn.

Yankeefan: I may not have the right to discipline someone elses child, but they also don't have the right to ruin a show I paid money for. We were in Orchestra and I'm pretty damn sure that the actors on stage could here it, people were turning around left and right and "shh"-ing like crazy. I got thanked after the show by the couple sitting infront of us.
Defying: If you don't want to listen to us whine about "popcorn" (by the way, not the ONLY thing we're whining about), no offense....don't read the thread, it's not like we're forcing you to or anything...

Was it during the show, or during the intermission? If it was during the show, I change my tune and give you 100% credit for taking the initative. If it was during the intermission, I still say to have gotten the HM.

Oh, I thought I was clear with this, it was about the first fifteen-twenty minutes of act two...definately while the show was happening....I don't care what people do at intermission as long as it stops when the curtains come back up...

Ooooh. Good job, then. I'm sure Patti LuPone would have done the same thing.

Nah, Ms. LuPone would have off and bitchslapped the little brat.

I thought bitchslapping may have caused too much of a commotion...but I considered it...for quite some time.
