I thought it was really funny how Matilda gave all the nominees a little stage time during the performance EXCEPT the one that actually won! I know it would have been really difficult to fit him in, but I still think it's funny!

This is also a little off topic, but I saw Macbeth this weekend and does anyone else think that they got completely robbed of Sound Design? The sound in that show was half of what made the show brilliant (aside from Alan of course!)

Matilda's performance was good except for the little girl completely cracking under pressure. The fact that they got an award and then cracked on national television says a lot. Lilla didn't crack at all. I think we all know which kids are the true professionals here.

Good thing you never saw Caroline, or Change.

Honestly, I think all this complaining about how the winners should deliver their acceptance speeches is HYSTERICAL. Other than for time constraints, why on earth would anyone try and police the winners on who they want to thank and how? I always find this attitude to be obscenely ridiculous.

I do understand being nervous in the moment and not wanting to forget people but please...like everyone who got you there doesn't realize it is YOUR moment.

And if it's THEIR moment, why should they do it YOUR way?

I know there is a 75 second time limit but wish sometimes producers should use their judgment and let someone like Cicely Tyson finish her speech.

They already gave her WAY more time than anyone else!

I love Jane Lynch, but I was underwhelmed by her performance. Her singing was mostly great, but I didn't see much comedy in the number at all. She got through the notes and lyrics and hit on the basic blocking, but it was pretty generic.

I think NPH is brilliant and he makes this awards show so interesting and fun. Of all the performances I like Christmas Story the best. That scene was awsome but I love love love tap
numbers. Pippin is awsome, so worth the money, didn't get Bring it on, wouldn't have paid to see it. Kinky Boots, lots of energy and Billy Porter is worth the price of admission. Cinderella, eh, if I had a young daughter, maybe, would be more inclined to take her to Matilda or Annie. For just adults, too many options better than Cinderella imo. Loved Patina's exceptance speech, so genuine and honest. She is a force and I am sure this is just one in a long line of Tony wins for her.
Cortney Vance and Billy Porter too had great speaches. Anyone who would say, "this one's for you mom" is awsome in my book.
Some of the presenters were strange, looked like they were just reading a teleprompter, Anna Kendrik looked like she was bored
or pissed, not sure. I like how current show actors introduced
the performances, genius really from a commercial standpoint.
Concerning winners and losers, every entertainment award is subjective and depending on who is watching and voting, not to mention politics. Everyone sees things differently, just look at this thread. So happy for everyone who won, how could you not be, there is so much hard work involved.

The show, like much of Broadway, was too too much. That tiny piece of real estate area called Broadway is a small community, a small stage for celebrity-obsessed America that's always trying to be more than it really is. Why else would a show celebrating Broadway NOT be in a Broadway house?

More than any other awards, Broadway has a schizophrenic personality as it promotes more and more and more, piously clinging to its desire to produce art. The result is you get major awards for both 'Kinky Boots' and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' Want to produce true art? You probably won't do it on Broadway, but if you have $25K, you CAN win a Tony.

Rather than celebrate the current season, the Tonys try to push as much into the broadcast as possible. And if that's the point, where was 'Book of Mormon' and 'Wicked' last night? Oh, right... that might focus the spotlight too much on making money.

One could fit all the voters into one of Broadway's smaller playhouses, few if any see all the performances and ultimately, it becomes about voting for friends and colleagues. Broadway always clings to its 'art,' its 'we are so high-brow making art'... but never doubt, it's never about anything but money.

The show last night? Was what it was. Broadway celebrating itself for one night. Today, it's back to the business of making money. Then again, I could be wrong.

The number of people who will not see a show they don't want to see... is unlimited. Oscar Hammerstein

A mitigating factor for Oona's performance would be that it's in a much higher key than in the show. On a different note, she performed on The View so I would have thought due to their "equal opportunity" rule either Sophia or Milly would do the solo.

Still a great performance, loved the start of When I Grow Up when the 6 students sing behind Lauren. I understood all the non-revolting lyrics, though it might just be easier with an Australian ear to hear through their accents.

Also really enjoyed the Cinderella performance and the live stream that enabled me to watch this from Australia while I was eating breakfast at 8am :P

One gnawing question-- did the Matilda girls receive their group honorary Tony or not? Can the show claim 5 Tony's instead of 4 then?

Last night's TONY Awards was the best in years!!! NPH did a wonderful job especially with that opening number! A few of the highlights were:

1) Wonderful performances from Matilda, Cinderella, A Christmas Story( Made me really want to see the show), Pippin, and Kinky Boots!

2) Amazing acceptance speeches from Judith Light, Andrea Martin, my girl Cyndi Lauper, Tracy Letts, Cicely Tyson, and Billy Porter.

3) The cancelled tv shows skit with Laura Benanti, Andrew Rannells, and Megan Hilty. It was hilarious!

4) Long running Broadway shows presenting the new ones.

Someone in a Tree -- not sure if that's sarcastic or not, but I did find it kind of interesting that they never even presented anything to the girls over the evening. The ONLY legitimate mention was by a rep from the American Theatre Wing in the opening speech of the creative arts awards/preshow. Kind of strange.

i found it quite funny that phantom chose to lip sync their performance after Neil Patrick Harris made that comment earlier about how everyone sings live...

Liza's Headband, nope not sarcastic at all in asking about the Matilda girls' Tony. Did it happen?

(I've given up on trying to express sarcasm on here, or much nuance in general. You just get misunderstood too much, so nowadays I'm just boringly on point with my comments.)

I don't see where people are getting Laura was mad? She seemed gracious and relieved it was all over to be honest. She'll get her TONY I believe in the next couple of years and for another RH show at that...

I think someone may have said this, but what a slap-in-the-face to the producers when neither Lane or Hanks won the award presented by Leo Bloom and Mrs. Gump-- I mean, Matthew Broderick and Sally Field!

Anyone who thought Jane Lynch was good never saw the great Dorothy Louden in the role. Lynch was a perfunctory interpretation of the song; Louden's was genius.

"Laura will be getting a tony in the next couple of years in another RH show" It has already been mentioned on these boards that Laura is supposed to do The Sound of Music in 2015. You would think that her next project would be a little more edgy and take a little more risk. IMO Aparently, that's what the Tony voters like.

I can confirm she has been approached but I can tell you it was only by a director and the conversation was nothing more than, "Laura if I do SOM in the next couple of years are you interested?". But I've also heard whispers of the "Cabaret" revival after the shows 2 "stars" dropped out.

And Dorothy Loudon is dead. Not to mention that the original Annie ran five years without her. Shows have to live on. Loudon was great and untouchable in the role, yes, of course. That doesn't mean all other comers need not apply or the show should never see the lights of day again.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

If Laura Osnes did Cabaret, that would most definately be more edgy!

Jay, is there any footage of Dorothy performing that song? I have the OBCR, and LOVE her rendition, but I've never found any clips of her Miss Hannigan other than Easy Street.

I like the changes they made with the Marie's dress for Cinderella.
