"They're talking about a revival," Harvey Fierstein notes. "I never say never to anything."

It'll happen right after the revival of The Wiz closes.

Hairspray certainly doesn't need a revival now.

I wouldn't be particularly shocked. As these live broadcasts realize the income they expected from media sales dries up faster in the new climate of such purchases, they'll turn to other means of ancillary product marketing, such as a live run. Just because The Wiz hasn't happened (yet), doesn't mean there won't eventually be a transfer of one of these live broadcasts, to Broadway or elsewhere.

maybe a slightly scaled down version? The show's been done everywhere, so I can't imagine there'd be huge interest to see this again on Broadway.

John Doyle's Hairspray would be... somethin'.

I am one of those that thinks a revival should come only after show has been closed for at least 10 years.

There are already 2 major movies, the original broadway show and now the upcoming tv movie. Wouldn't a broadway revival now be overkill?

Well Hairspray has been closed for just about 8. By the time they got financing in place and a theater for a revival it would probably be 9 years at the earliest. It's hard to believe it's been that long since Hairspray closed, but it has.
That said, I do think a revival is a bad idea for all the other reasons mentioned.

There is indeed "talk" but who knows if it will actually happen.

Agreed. Just give it 10-15 more years

I guess here's the thing with the possibility of reviving any of these LIVE shows....I think there are a whole lot of people that wouldn't want to pay for a ticket, for something that they just saw on tv for FREE. Pretty sure I wouldn't be interested.

“I’ve heard some of those rumors, too—that they have been thinking about a revival for the last couple of years or so,” he says, adding that the December 7 broadcast will “put the property up in another big way and [make Hairspray] very visible. He continued, “I think in the next year or so, that might happen, but I don’t know anything about it. I’ve just heard those same kinds of rumblings.” - Robert Greenblatt

True but even still I think it would do better to wait until maybe 2025. I would rather see something like "City Of Angels" be revived.
