Don't worry about the French Revolution, the story takes place decades later :)
The tour program should have a brief synopsis in it, but don't worry about studying up, just let it unfold before you and enjoy.

PBS just started a brand new Les Mis 6 week mini series last night. I watched the first episode and thought it was pretty well done so I'm going to watch the rest and then try to catch the tour during my July trip to Chicago. I believe the first episode is available for streaming for free. This was my very first Broadway show as a kid so it's been a long time since I've been exposed to this material.

The first time I saw Les Miserables, I struggled to keep the characters straight in my head. There are a LOT of them, and for some reason their names don't make it easy to remember who they are or their relationship to one another. To this day, when someone mentions Fantine or Cosette, I have to think for a minute to be certain which is the mother and which is the child.
