I'm back in NYC in 4 weeks and was thinking of taking my friends to see something slightly different. I have a few concerns about the nudity - is it tastefully done or is it just plain nudity and is the current cast any good?
Cheers

Posted: 8/30/09 at 6:46amThe guys stand there naked and singing. That's pretty much about it. The lyrics might be considered taboo. But it's a fun time. I haven't seen the show in a while, but most of the guys are great, and lovely to look at!

Take a look at my screen name. I did the show, but I'm not biased.
Its not tacky or crude. Its just a celebration of nudity - with some gay themes of course.
Also, The show just got a pretty fresh cast. Of the 10 (8 on stage) boys, I think six of them are new to their tracks. You might be weary of this but its actually a good thing. SOme of the boys (most of the ones who just left) stay with the show for YEARS and they get very mechanical with their performances.
Seeing this new cast should give the show some much needed energy anf life

Here's a link to an article I did a few years ago. Maybe you can glean a bit of info about the show from it. Of course, these cast members have left the show by now.

Posted: 8/30/09 at 11:31amIt's a fun time. It's like burlesque without clothes. The guys, when I saw it, had very nice voices. I recommend having a drink or two before the show and then relaxing and having fun. George Livengood, Eric Potter, and Eric Dean Davis are really great and very talented. Hopefully they are still with the show.

Posted: 8/30/09 at 11:46amYou can also rent the DVD and take a look at some of the songs for a batter idea of what you're in for. The Off-Broadway production is just shorter and staged a little differently, but it's basically the same.

Posted: 8/30/09 at 11:50amExcept the movie IMO is rather flat and loses much of the energy, fun, and vitality of the live show. I think NBS is a cabaret that was designed to be seen live and never meant for filming. I think it was filmed for profit alone. I think someone who watched the movie might not be likely to check out the show.

I agree, though I am fond of some of the performances on the DVD. I'd like to hope most theatre fans would know that it's next to impossible to capture the energy of a live performance on film and wouldn't use that as a deciding factor. I wanted to see the show after seeing the DVD, but that's just me.

Posted: 8/30/09 at 12:12pmYou're right CATSNY! There are some good performers in the film. Joe Souza is great and some good renditions of the material. It just seems like the film was so cheaply done. too bad.

Posted: 8/30/09 at 12:36pmGeorge Livengood is back in the show? When did you last see it BettY? He and I became fairly good friends after the interview but we lost touch. I'd love to see the show again if he's re-joined the cast.

"I am sure you can find him."
I'm sure, too.
Are any of the cast members above average?

You can get in. According to the website you have to have a parent with you if you're under 18, but I don't know how strictly that rule in enforced.

Here's a funny story about children at NBS:
One of the last times I saw the show, we sat behind an Asian man who had brought his son to the show. I guess the boy was about 6 or 7. As the show starts off with the cast fully clothed, everything went well. Then as the guys disrobed, the father covered his son's eyes with the Playbill and rushed him out of the theater.
What were they expecting? I mean the show's title tells it all. Perhaps the word "naked" has a different meaning in their language.
BTW: When George knows I'm in the audience, he usually tries to bust on me during his interaction with the crowd.
